Is this a stupid idea?

I've had Mia for a year at the end of this month, and we've come so far. But I still have not ridden her because I don't have a saddle. I'm just so fed up with having a horse right there but not being able to ride (don't get me wrong, I love Mia, and I love working with her, but I also love riding).

Would it be feasable to make a bareback pad (with an "oh *censored word*" strap) and use that for riding? I'd have someone leading her, of course, at least at first.

That is not a stupid idea what so ever!! Bareback is very fun!

I am not sure how she is built (wither wise), but you could even just jump on her without a bareback pad!

Why dont you have a saddle yet though? Could you have a saddle fitter come out and help you find one?

Well my question is why don't you have a saddle yet? Also this may not be a good idea, if you have not ridden this horse in a year she could very well need a tune up and jumping on with a home made bareback pad could wind up being very dangerous.

How broke is the horse? How much experience riding do you have?

If the horse is VERY broke and you are a balanced rider forget the pad and jump on bareback and see how it goes. If the horse is NOT very broke and/or you are not a balanced rider no, it's not a good idea.

I ride bareback without a pad, I don't even own one. I think my longest bareback trail ride was four hours. It was a blast. On the advanced trail at that! Haha, oh some of those hills...

ANYHOW. How broke is she? Without a saddle you will need to rely on your balance and riding skills.

I've had 2 years of riding instruction, but I've not ridden for several years, hence my wariness of riding without a saddle.

I don't know how broke she is, but she is supposedly broke, and was supposedly used as a pack horse (I guess that's what happens when you get a horse for $100)

My mom is making me pay for the saddle myself, and as I don't have a job, that's rather difficult.

I guess I'll wait until I can get a saddle (Christmas, maybe)

You can get a good used saddle off Ebay for just a few hundred, Borrow someone else's? You can buy a nicer quality synthetic saddle for around $300!

That's about $295 I don't have! I get $10 a week for my allowance, but that's it unless I do extra stuff, which I don't really have time for.

Could you possibly borrow someone elses saddle that fits your horse? How old are you?

Funny thing about life, you make time for those things which are most important to you.
