It's just a darker Paly... like a smutty buckskin is a darker shade. And a liver chestnut is a darker chestnut...

I've found that chocolate palomino is sort of a term that gets used on either a palomino that has the sooty gene or a silver dapple.

Just darker palomino. Although you may have a higher chance of getting another dark palomino or dark any color.

It's just the cream gene on a chestnut horse that likely has the sooty gene added to the mix.

Yes, and that's an incorrect association A silver dapple that presents as that dark chocolate color with the silvery/white mane is a black horse with the silver gene (or a dark sooty bay with silver). Shetland ponies have silver dapple very commonly seen.

You see a "chestnut" paint who is, in all likelihood, a dark sooty palomino That is why the phenotype - what we see - does not always tell the truth

His color is really neat and I realize that was the subject of the question but why is he listed at $4500.00 is that his stud fee. I should look again, even if that is his sale price isn't that a lot? Again his color is interesting and all but I wasn't really impressed by him overall. Maybe I am missing something but he isn't something I would choose to breed to. He has a tiney hiney. Just overall umimpressive. (is that a word?)

Thanks for explaining that, JB!

Yep, unimpressive is a word .

I didn't check what he was used for or what his bloodlines or show record and training are like, but if he does have nice bloodlines, nice training, and mots importantly, a nice show record, as a stallion, $4500 would be quite cheap. But, as a stud fee, I think that's a pretty horrendous fee . I've seen some SUPER nice stallions with incredible show records who had stud fees of $3000. One was an Arab who did park and those kinds of things (not sure of all the names or what each of them mean, like show hack), another was a jumper, and another was a dressage horse.

With the amount of dark in his tail and as high as his leg white goes up, I see either a chestnut or a bay.
