Is There Actual Truth?

I was told the other day to be very careful feeding beet pulp to my mini. It can cause founder.

Never have I been told not to feed beet pulp to a mini. It's something that most minis I know (if not all) get fed. Legz has been on it for over a year and she has NO problems eating it.

My boss's minis get it all the time (I believe 3xs a day).

Is this actually true? Or are they pulling my leg?

And the same with rice bran. I got the same "Be careful, they'll founder on it".

I've never heard of a horse foundering from fat content, it's usually protein that's associated with founder issues.

I've never heard of that either. I suppose if the mini is already metabolic you would have to wash the molassas off of it or buy some without molassas.

no..NO..NO...NOT foundering issues from protein content....from an overload of starches and sugars...IE..the horse getting into the grain bin..or getting too much fresh new spring grass...

LOL Protien does not cause founder!! Sugars and starches do!!!

Now I'm beginning to think I should go back to my old feed store...

Poulin vs. Purina...which one?

I'll give them a benefit of a doubt.

They could have been saying that both of those feeds can be used to 'fatten' a horse up. Which puts it at an increased risk of laminitis and founder.

Now that's giving the benefit of a doubt, but still a possibility.

Poulin would be my choice. I actually like their feeds.
