my family breeds welsh mountain pony's, but because they're too small for me to ride my mom and dad (for christmas)bought me a 19 yr old thoroughbred mare called scarlet heath, she is in a paddock with my other horse (my other horse is a 15 month old 1st cross quarter horse filly called Dandaloo-rose :aka: dandy)lately she has goten a capped shoulder, which has caused her great discomfort. the day after she got the capped shoulder, the farrier came out to shoe her (we only get our 2 stallions and scarlet done because it costs $$$$$)we weren't home (because we had to go into town to get a newborn colt checked out with the vet)but we thought the farrier wasn't coming, but when we got home she and the 2 stallions were shoed, and the farrier rang up that night and told us that he had come out and shoed them. the next day (today) scarlet started to limp on her back leg, it doesn't seem to be causing her any pain, i have hosed it down and tried to massage it. i don't know what to do because scarlet doesn't like floats and i don't want to force her onto float to take he to the vet, and because we live an hour out of town it would cost about ($3500)to get the vet out and treat her, what can i do??? bawling help! |

Why does it cost you $3500 to get your vet out? Did your farrier do all 4's? If so, I would get him to come back. A similar thing happened to my sisters horse (minus the capped shoulder), she called the farrier back, he pulled the shoe off and found an absess. It wasn't huge, but the trim was just enough to bring it to the surface. I would be pretty suspicious if my horse got sore after shoeing.

i agree, have the farrier come back and check it out. he could've hit a nail in wrong or there could be an absess. running_ Tiny running_

well we live about an hour out of town, so thats 2 hours traveling (there and back )would be $500 and then because she's an exrace horse and so tall $100 then if they were to do the check up it would be about $500 and then give her antibiotics and so one anout $600 and then they would have to come back and check on her the next day, thats travel fees again plus another $500 to check her then another $600 to give her more antibiotics. and the farrier isn't going to comeback out for another 2 - 9 (thats when he has to do my friends horse) |

How do you get these figures? You don't know even know what is wrong for sure, so how would she need "$600 antibiotics"? I am very curious.
