Personally, no I don't think that it is okay, especially for the reasons you gave. Just to have a part of the mare is not realistic. Breeding a horse will not create a carbon copy, your foal could turn out to be totally opposite of the mare. The big questions that you need to answer before making that decision are: How is the confo? Does she have good conformation, or are there faults that could be passed on to the foal that will be detrimental when finding the foal a new home. Can I find and afford a stud that will only compliment my mare? The mare is only half of the battle, finding a stud that is worthy is a whole other obsticle. Can I afford pre-natal care? Can I afford to pay vet bills in an emergency, during labor or after? Am I willing to risk my mare or the foals life if something were to happen? By breeding my mare, am I bettering the breed, even if she isn't registered? Can I find a good home for the foal if the need arises, even though there is a huge over-population problem with unwanted foals right now? These are important questions, if there is any doubt, don't do it.

I personally think that is the absolute WORST reason to breed a mare. If you are going to breed your mare you should have a reason for breeding as in Improvement of the horse ( yes you CAN have a registered foal out of an unregistered mare if you do you research and breed correctly) But Breeding just to breed is not acceptable in my book and won't happen at my place. I breed with breed improvement and individual horse improvement in mind. I never breed just to have a piece of an individual horse when they die. Other things to consider are the risk and Expenses of breeding. It is not cheap to provide proper vet care all year and proper feeding all eyar to ensure a healthy foal and then you have the rsik fo having a still born or a foal that dies soon after birth. You also put your mare at risk every time you breed. So If It were me, I'd consider the mare and IF she met the certian requirements as in she has GOOD conformation, A GREAT temperment and you can find a Registered Well conformend well mannered stallion that will Enhance all the right attributes then I might conisder it. Otherwise, I'd leave the mare as my companion and go looking to buy a young one at the sales. It is always cheaper to go buy a foal at the sale then to raise one from your own breeding. Quote:

I agree. I would not breed for that reason. You and Ruby share a special bond and nothing will "replace her". Perhaps when she is no longer around, you can open your heart to another horse in need of a loving home.

Thanks guys, And I didn't take any opinion the wrong way. You guys really made me think about it. Why bring a foal into this world that doesn't need to be brought in when there are plenty horses in need out there. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I think I'll forget about breeding her.
