Is it "Lunging" or "Longeing"

OK...I have always kinda smirked at those who say "Lounging" because I KNOW that that is wrong, but while looking up some training tips, I found it spelled "Longeing" on a fairly reputable horse oriented webside. (link below)

http://www.horsechannel.com/horse-tr...fely-5073.aspx

So.....is it one of those words that can be spelled different ways depending on what part of the world you are from (for instance color and colour)?

I have to say I have always thought it was mis-spelled when I saw it spelled the way it is in the link.

I think I have waaaay too much time on my hands

I use the spelling Lunging. I think the other is more European...

I've always said "lunging" but now that I think about it, "longeing" seems more correct.
Because "lunge" is this in the dictionary:
lunge (lnj)
n. 1. A sudden thrust or pass, as with a sword.
2. A sudden forward movement or plunge.

Well, here is another spelling to throw into the soup pot.

We always used the spelling, loungeing a horse, and many of the old horse books I have use that. These are books 100+ years in age.

To me, the lunging, longeing always looks funny.

Here's another one, when did they change "coronet band" to coronary band?

I think it's more regional too, but interchangeable.

Here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longeing

It says one is used in US, one in UK.

Longeing is an "older" form of the word. Originally it came from the french word "longer", to work a horse on a long rein. Over time it transformed. Both are correct. You will find "longeing" more prominent in some areas geographically than others and in some circles more than others.

See, it just goes to prove you can learn something new everyday on HGS. Especially since so many threads send me scrambling into cyber space to do research.

(I still refuse to use the spelling Lounging )

I use the term "longe" or "longeing" as that is the updated European and correct version. Loungeing....I'm thinking my horse would be inclined on a couch...LOL. The correct term for the other is 'coronet" band.

American here, i have always spelled it as longe-ing tho pronounced as lunge. also refer to the coronet as the coronet. i will likely use these spellings and pronounciations for the rest of my life, seeing as i have used them exclusively so far : )
