To the OP, since your horse is a wind ****** have you got a collar for him? He could be spending his grazing time sucking instead. Also have him checked for ulcers.

I am currently feeding him 1 scoop of millrun one scoop of calm performer 3 scoops of chalf. I bought him a collar yesturday, I just hope its on right. my budgets not to bad i think i can afford about $50 a week i buy the millrun and calm performer one week and then the bag of chalf the following week so its not one huge bill every fortnight. is this feed ok? should i increase the amount? ohh and i also just started putting copper sulphate in his feed to help with the windsucking problem. Thanks everyone |

I had 15 yo horse in last year who was windsucker. Collar would make him unhappy and miserable. He needed to spend some time every day inside to stuff his stomach. Putt on lovely muscle. He also did better when had chopped hay and alfa alfa available than grass. (just my 2 cents)

| Senior Member+ | SL - our Sugar beet has just risen to over $50 for 20kg bag..... 12 months ago it was only $35... no longer feeding it as I can't justify the cost. Speedibeet and Ezybeet - both same price. Speedibeet FYI - most horses around here aren't that happy on it (well they don't scoff it like they do the ezi) and it goes off quicker once wet is what I found, we had it intorduced about 18months ago - refuse to use it now after I found several dead rats in the feed.... even worse was the feet that came out once soaked LMAO.

i read it in a book called natural horse care it talks about how alot of australian soils haven't got enough copper in them and a low level of copper in horses can be part of the reason why horses windsuck. there is pages and pages of info about it in this book that im not going to go through it all. i then also spoke with my produce store who knows my horses and what i feed them it is only a very small amount that goes into his feed and i dont put it in every day too much copper sulphate can become quite bad. i have heard of other remedies but hopefully this one works if not i will let you know and try some of the others.

i don't think he looks that thin- he has nice muscle - could use more but i would watch to see that he doesn't get lighter than he is. personally i wouldn't worry about it- slightly lean is a healthier way for all mammals to live- for digestive system and skeletal structure.

Also, it never hurts to check/treat for ulcers. could be a BIG cause! He isnt in a horrible weight, but thin by my standards. JMO

I don't think he was getting much work at all before I got him but he's back into it now just so I can build up the muscle but I'm not wanting to work him to hard as I don't want him to lose more weight. I have increased his feed now and will look into buying a round bale for him. Thanks everyone |
