Interesting....

I just heard that automatic waterers can cause colic due to the fact that the horse does not get enough water...they are small, and need to refill, normally the horse drinks then dosent wait....not like having a BIG bucket of water where they drink till they are done. Roughage gets impacted....

Anyone else have comments? The horse at the barn here who died from colic on the weekend had a automatic waterer, they all do here.

I've never heard that. We have them at my schooling barn, and have never had a problem with them.

It's interesting if it's true.

Hmm interesting. I've never heard that. We use them for both our horses and cattle and we've never had problems.

I've never heard of that, but then again I've never seen automatic waterers. I personally like a bucket for my horse, it works fine, why fix something thats not broke? -shrugs- but i guess people think they're more convienent? idk.

We don't use automatic waterers because of that reason. We like to use buckets so they get enough, and we can see exactly how much they are drinking. Buckets are easier to clean too! Its a shame that a horse at your barn passed away

The vet clinic where Timmy is has them in the barn. You would think they wouldn't use them if they could cause problems.

I've never heard of that myself.

Lack of water can lead to colic symptoms and can cause impaction. However, allowing a hot horse after hard work, to drink heavily can also lead to colic. Those are the only 2 ways I know of that a horse can get colic or colic symptoms caused by water.

Is there an article?

Ya, you wouldn't think so....but it sounds logical...they are small and they take time to re fill, not like a big endless bucket/.
