| Full Member | Injured knee
Hello, I just got a young foal who had to be weaned off the mother early. I have never had a horse this young and I have a question about an injury he came to me with. I was told by the previous owner that he was kicked by another foal which cause swelling and fluid in his left front knee. They showed me vet. papers proof indicating his knee was not broken and no torn lig. I am just curious though because his leg is still a little swollen and it is kind of turned out a little. They said it was just from the swelling and should correct it's self as the swelling goes down. I am wondering if anyone has ever had this issue or has heard of it before and could give me a little extra advice. If need be I will get another vet. out here myself to check him out. He is only 3 month! Thanks Amber Lynn |

Honestly, I'd have your vet out and do an xray and an ultrasound. Even if no bony inolvement seemed to be present initially, if a piece of bone was bruised enough to die, causing a sequestrum, you'd want to know so it can be treated.

do you think it could be treatable? I figured the farrier might have to trim that hoof a certain way to make it go back in.....do you really think it would be treatable at a young age? I will give my vet. a call

I think its treatable but i would DEFINATLY have a vet come out right away and take a look at it! i'v known horses that have been kicked in the knee and wernt treated and have either bulged knees from the experience or sligtly turned knee. i'm sure its easily fixable but i would definatly get a vet out to see what they think! good luck and i hope he's ok! congrats on the new horse

Thanks for responding. I am going to have my vet. come out and take a good look at it. See what he thinks. I just hope it is something treatable. He is a beautiful little boy and I would love to be able to work with him and ride him some day. But, only if he can heal fully and be healthy and pain free. He runs now and doesn't act like it phases him or even hurts him. To be honest with you I think it hurts me more looking at it than it probably hurts him. LOL!!! I have him seperated from the rest of my horses so he doesn't get hurt again.I will have my vet out though. Thanks Amber Lynn |
