| Senior Member+ | I'm Stuck - sell / keep? Ok, so I'm selling my mustang and my thoroughbred. I just can't keep up with this many horses, I've always planned on selling my mustang this summer, so I've kinda got over that (though I'll probably cry when he leaves anyways...). Ok, but I planned on keeping my TB for at least a couple of years, I've only had her 6 months! The reason I'm selling her is 'cause I'd like to really focus on my new horse, Romeo and go to lots of clinics and shows, and it's hard keeping up with many horses financially as well. So the reason I'm posting this is because every single day that I go and work with Baylee (my TB), I always think about keeping her, she's such a nice horse. She's got a wonderful personality, I always am happy after and when working with her, she's always trying to please, she's so sensitive as well, which is fun. I guess she'd be a good oprotunity for me to continue to work with since I'm not used to such sensitive horses, and the more different kinds of horses I can work with, the better. I know you guys can't help me with my decision, but it feels good to type what I'm thinking, try to get my thoughts staight, and I wouldn't mind your guy's opinion either! lol. So, I was entertaining the idea of keeping her... technically if I sold my mustang quickly (within the next month or two) than I could finanically keep her up, but money would be tight (don't worry I've got untouchable money in savings for vet emergencies, etc). I wouldn't be able to go to as many clinics and shows with Romeo as I'd like... But keeping her will give me the oprotunity to fully develop a riding horse on my own, which is what I planned on with her...rar, idk. Now I really want to keep her...maybe I should go over my finances and see for sure if I'd be able to do it, idk - then if it doesn't work out, I can always sell her if need be. hmm... sorry for the long ramble, i'm just thinking out loud.... thanks for listening... i'll go think on it some more.... |

| Senior Member+ | Heres what I would do. Put both horses up for sale. If the mustang sells within a month or two, and the TB doesn't, then keep the TB. And if the TB sells, then you werent supposed to keep her anyway.

| Senior Member | This happened to me.. Exactly. I bought my paint mare (Cue) in January '06. I had planned to keep her for a whole year and then sell her. She was finished with training really quick and then in the spring I got REALLY busy with lessons and training. I went from riding Cue 6x a week to riding her 1 or 2x a week. She is a horse that needs out 4+ times a week, and it began to show. She started acting like a crazy thing, and ended up bucking me in April (was in the hospital for 2 weeks). The day I entered the hospital, I bought a mare over the internet using my cell phone (stupid idea - especially when I didn't REMEMBER buying her 2 days later, lmao). This was a 2 year old filly who'd had about 30 days of training and about 2 weeks of trotting the barrel pattern. When I got out of the hospital - I had 2 horses, 21 lessons/training a week, and a 40 hour school schedule. As you see, I just ran out of time. I decided it would be best to sell Cue, especially because the money was running low (as you said you're having the same issue). Board was $350 a month (which is absolutely ridiculous in our state), and I wanted to move quick. I started spending all my time with Little, the 2 year old, like you are with Romeo. I want(ed) her to be ready to race as soon as she could. I ended up hardly taking out Cue and she got worse. I had about 30 people who desperately wanted to buy her, but nobody could purchase her right away. I finally (three weeks ago) accepted an offer of payments. She was picked up and now I'm being paid payments. It's very hard, and if I could - I definitely would have kept Cue. I didn't want to ride her or race her anymore, but I would have DIED for a baby from her. She had a killer personality, so sweet and in-your-pocket. Lovely mare. But riding her wasn't working out for me. If I had the space, money, and time - she'd never leave my ownership. Selling her was very hard, but it was for the best. She was bought by a girl about three years younger than I and she is going to continue barrel racing her. I've moved stables and just have Little, who takes up a TON of my time (like Romeo probably does for you). I quit a lot of my lessons and training so that I only had 12 a week and would have time for my own horse. I don't have school for another month, so I've got some time still. It's a hard decision to make, and I still hate that I had to sell Cue. I do think it was for the best, though. I hope you get through it alright and my story helps you out. Good luck with it, so sorry you're in this position!
