Angry I'm Going to Shoot My New Dog! *PICS#137*

Okay maybe not, but one can dream!

We brought this new 18mo Australian Shepherd home from Arizona yesterday. She was an inside, pampered show dog at her last home.

Now she's a pet who is going to live predominantly outside.

She does NOT like that and is not transitioning too well. How do I know? Well, if there are lights on inside, she won't quit barking! She is running back and forth between the French doors and the back doors.

I also think she is in heat; but I wouldn't know, we've always had neutered dogs. I have an appointment at the vet tomorrow to make an appointment to get her spayed; go figure.

She's absolutely perfect inside, perfect in the car, perfect on the leash...Just not outside.

We're taking her to obedience class ASAP. Goodness!

Pics of her coming home yesterday...

Will she lay quiet in a crate inside? or do you not want her in at all?

Does it work to just ignore her? I know that works for some dogs... they eventually give up when they figure out it won't get them inside.

I had a dog like that. It was bad at night so we would bring her in and she slept in our bed with us. She was a brindle pit bull.

Aww, poor Batgirl! She might get used to it, but might not, some dogs just don't take well to being separated all the time. If I were her I'd be upset too, being used to being inside and part of the family all the time to being stuck outside alone! I've always had inside dogs though so a part of me says "bring her in, bring her in!" Dogs are such social animals, it goes against their nature to be alone, they want to be part of the "pack," which is you guys inside. How is she doing with your other dog?

I ignore them. Our dogs bark to be let in, and I ignore them. Once they have shut up for ten minutes or so, I let them in. Well, you might have to start with five minutes or so.

Our dogs live pretty much outside; always have. They're only allowed in when we're home and downstairs able to watch them. Cyn, she's crate trained, but we don't own a crate. Personally I'd be happier outside than inside cooped up in a crate We have SUCH mild weather and there's tons of shelter and soft surfaces outside.

I know I'm home right now, but we're trying to get her used to being outside. Plus, I just took them on a pretty long walk so our other dog jumped in the pool to cool off...If we let them inside, it's together, and Mr. Wet Dog can't come inside right now!

Throughout the day I've been letting her in when she ISN'T barking her head off. I'm trying to reward her when she's being good.

I've been ignoring her since we got home, and she keeps going!

She's not alone though Lauren! She's out there with my other dog, who absolutely loves her. She treats him like she treated Stoli, where she wasn't initiating the contact, so they're not attached at the hip like Stoli would have preferred There haven't been any problems and even do well in the back seat of my car together

She may not be used to being outside this much, Id work on praising short quiet moments outside... then rewarding her by letting her in for a bit and then repeat. You may be surprised how well this works. Ignore the barking, and the moment shes quiet make it a big deal!
It may seem like alot of work, but sometimes we have to put out alot of effort to retrain their thinking.
