Ideas for healing feet

I need some suggestions for medicators or conditioner for a tender footed horse. I have recently started taking care of someone's horse who doesn't have the time for him at the public stables I stall at. The poor thing's feets are in HORRIBLE shape. I don't think he EVER gets them picked and his hooves are cracking. So, I wanted some ideas about what to use to get his feet in better shape. I am having the farrier come out an put shoes on him, because I know that will better comfort him when walking on those tender feet. What would you suggest for fixing his feet?

Topicals and shoes won't fix the fact that it seem the horse's feet are neglected in the way of trimming. Feet that stand in muck all day are subject to all sorts of nasties, and shoes won't fix that. Poor trimming (or simply waiting too long between trims) can and do lead to cracking and chipping, and topicals won't fix that.

Proper farrier care is better than anything else.

First, do you have permission for farrier? What contract do you have?

Put everything you are allowed to do in writing and have a contract done up. BEcause if that horse comes up lame or injured, you are liable.

Shoes may not help the horse...may hinder the horse even more. Especially if the hoof wall is already damaged. A few good trims to get the feet back in order may solve everything, or you may find an even worse condition.

So first off, find out what the owner will allow you to do and authorize.

My farrier told me to give Dandy Jello, Mon wed and fri. every week. suppose to help the hooves. dandy has a crack in his hoof b/c of being foundered. it gets really bad when he doesnt get shoed on time.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence that Jello has any effect on the quality of a horse's hooves.

Proper diet/nutrition, exercise and hoofcare on the other hand have all been shown to be both effective and essential.

If the feet are soft, try Keratex Hoof Hardener, and put Corona ointment on the coronet band. You can't do much besides proper farrier care, but these can really help.

I second that. You took the words right out of my mouth!

Get a good farrier out to look at them then get your horse on some vitamins with plenty of biotin in the mix, and also use some hoof conditioner. But defenately get her on some kind of hoof and overall supplement...it works miracles
