| Senior Member+ | I want to start a horse photography business - How's this for a start?(pic overload) Here are some photos I took of other horses/riders at the show this weekend. I've been trying to work on some of the things that were suggested to me in previous photography threads and I personally see a ton of improvement. What should I work on from here? What are the good and bad points of these pictures? If it came down to it and these were your horses, would you be willing to pay for prints of these, and if so, how much? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

| Senior Member+ | WOW... I'd say that's more than a start! The pictures are beautiful - both action shots and still frames... You have a talent for sure. I love the pictures 2nd and 3rd from the bottom on the first post! When do you plan on going into business? |

| Senior Member+ | I like the same pictures too they are stunning! I noticed though some are a little blury, espacially on the first page, could just be your camera but othe wise they are awsome Not that I seem any here, but do you have a graphics programe where you can like fix the colouring, crop, take certain parts of the picture out and make it so it looks natural??

I'm planning on starting up next spring. I'll use this winter to a) become more familiar with my camera, and b) gather up some money from lessons to buy some needed things, like bigger/more memory card(s), an extra battery, a tripod, etc. Then I'll take pictures at whichever shows I'm not competing in, start up a website, and then try to build up a reputation so I can get hired as the "official" show photographer at some local shows around here. Yup, some are definitely out of focus, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that I'm not completely used to my camera and I'm not very good with choosing the best settings for the light aperture, shutter speeds, and all of the other technical stuff that I'm going to have to work on. I do have Photoshop Elements 4.0, but I don't currently have a computer that it runs on right now

| Senior Member+ | i think a lot of them are just stunning! they're crisp and clear. the colors are fantastic. and your timing is wonderful! what kind of camera do you use? i have a DSLR, but i'm a bit lazy, so most of the time i just use the preset modes. i usually just change my ISO setting and get good results. as for price, that's really all up to you. there's a lady around here who charges $15 for a 4x6. yes, that's right. outrageous is an understatement. lol i generally charge about $1 for a 4x6, $5 for a 5x7, and $10 for an 8x10. mind you, i don't have an official business set up.. yet. this is just around the barn really. after i graduate, i'd really like to branch out and set up at shows and do farm calls. good luck with this. i think you really have a lot of talent, and a great eye for it.

I'm thinking that when I set up my website I'll do something along the lines of $5 for a 4x6, $7 for a 5x7, $12 for an 8x10, $20 for a poster, and $25 for a full-size JPEG file so they can make whatever prints they want. How does that sound? That is definitely more than I would charge for "just around the barn", but I figure that MOST people who have horses and are showing can afford a picture if they like it enough. I may also offer "packages" at discounted rates. Does that seem reasonable or too high? I can always start out lower and then raise my prices as my reputation and skill improves. Also, because I'm not interested or able to buy fancy printing equipment, do you think that it would be okay if I go to walmart or walgreens to make the prints and then send them those?

I pretty much have just used trial and error. If I like how something turns out, I try it again and vary it a little bit each time. If I don't, then I stay away from that idea. The pictures I posted here are my favorites out of about 100, so I don't just point and shoot and always end up with something even decent Good luck, just keep snapping as many photos as you can!
