I put my horses tail up in a wrap (i have pictures of step to step process on how to do it) and I have found it works WONDERS! I learned the trick from a reining trainer and love it!

Then, you just sit back and wait till it touches the ground or close to it, unwrap and rewrap, and repeat).

My one yearlings tail (since I could do it all summer as he wasnt being shown) has a nice LONG and THICK tail

Is the coconut oil supposed to help with growth or just keep it tangle free and easier to pick out ? I don't brush my horses tail...just pick it with my fingers but I don't put anything in it.... this MTG and coconut oil concept intrigues me...

I also believe that proper nutrition makes a big difference... feed the tail from the inside out...same with coat and feet....

Wash it and put it up in a braid in tail wrap. I also use MTG which works wonders. I keep my horse tails up all the time and with the exception of my stallion who someone stole his tail a few years ago which was thick and touched the ground and now is growing back quite slow. All have long thick tails. I redo them every few days to a week depending on how they are doing. More often in the summer then winter. Same with manes. They get braided redone every few days washed and conditioned in the summer every 2 weeks. Keeps them from getting tangled and knotted. The manes are past their shoulder so tangling is a problem.

Well since my horse is in a stall, I braid his tail and leave it in and then every couple of days wash it and brush it and then but it back in a braid.
Had a tail bag in but he made a mess of it lol, so I just have the braid.

Don't know how well that'd work if the horse was outside all the time though (if your horse is outside all the time) lol

Coconut oil conditions the hair, so it keeps breakage down, helps with combing, etc.

Be careful with tail bags though, Make sure you tie it below the tail bone and not too tight. Also make sure your braid is not super tight as well. Tails will fall of, bone and all if the circulations is cut off... I've see this with my own eyes. Braid it and tie with black electric tape to protect hair, no need to bag it. Brush it out before a show or once a months with tons of conditioner while it is wet. Let dry and braid it lose. If he can grow a good tail he will...

Beautiful horse in that photo above my post....

I think I am going to give the MTG and coconut oil a try... I can't wash his tail though...it's too cold here already.... so the washing will have to wait until May lol

When it is too cold to really wash the tail out side I use a bucket. Dip the tail into the bucket get it wet and then suds it up and wash away. You can not get the bass of the tail but you can get the part that you are braiding washed which is important. Then rinse it the same way with a bucket. Will take3-4 buckets to get all the suds and such out but it works well. Then condition it but not heavy just enough that when it dries it is easy to comb out. Then I lightly towel dry it. Not like you would your hair but just put it around the trail to soak up some of the extra water. Let it dry brush it out and put it up in a braid in trail wrap. Once it is put up it stays fairly clean and I normally do not need to wash it again but maybe one time over the winter.
