I think she's colicking...

We had a rescue pony at our farm named Delilah, she's a 6 year old buckskin, and she's pregnant. Shes hundreds of pounds under weight but she was starting to gain. Today at about noon she layed down and wouldnt get up, at first we didnt find this wierd because she had been very week and tired scince she arirved about 3 weeks ago. Anyways at about 5:30 she started halfway rolling and i imediatly thought colic, i went over and layed with her and she wouldnt move, she was breathing very hard. I noticed she was bagging up and her privates were swollen so i thought maybe she was in labor. After a little while i got her up and moved her into a smaller paddock and tryed to walk her but she just kept laying down and rolling. After about an hour of rolling and sleeping she got up, walked around, and then pooped, after that she took a SMALL SMALL sip of water and nibbled some hay but then layed right back down. She isnt my horse and the owner wouldnt call the vet but i really think something was wrong. Do you think it was the baby or colic?

If you believe she is in labor, LEAVE HER ALONE, you can be causing her to STOP labor and might cause complications in the process.

Agree with BW, this also belongs in health. I am sorry that you are having to watch this. Maybe the owner knows its the baby and not colic? If not, if he/she thinks this might be colic and is refusing a vet....then she doesnt need a horse...esp not a pregnant rescue.

PS--About 2 days to 2 weeks BEFORE foaling a mare does what is commonly known as "positioning" and it looks like colic also. It means that she is trying to help the foal turn.

Most mares start to bag 3-4 weeks prior to foaling. When they are getting close to foaling...the nipples will lose the "pinched" look and will become filled with milk....Nipples fill, not just the udder. Also, the udder and nipples will become shiny and look like they are dusted with sugar. The milk will change from clear to amber to white and get sticky. The milk will also change from salty to bland(no taste) or kinda sweet depending on your tasted buds. If it tastes like tears...she isnt ready. Not suggesting that you taste this mares milk as she isnt yours, but maybe you can ask the owner. Yes, I tasted my mares milk. Mares milk is a food source in many countries and you would be surprised how tasty it is.

Yes, there is also waxing...which looks like milk leaking out and becoming like a milk-cicle(think icecicle) hanging from the nipple. But from what I have seen with my own mares...most dont wax.

Milk can change very fast too. 4pm it can be clear and salty and at 7pm white and bland and then foal at 10pm.

Remember, different mares will do different things. I know of a mare who didn't show ANY signs, and WHAM, baby on the ground. She bagged, waxed, and streamed milk within a few hours of dropping the baby.

The owner wasnt sure what it was, she was concerned and all but refused to call the vet

Her bags were much larger then a normal horse but not as large as the other pregnant mare who is due tomorow
