Am I crazy or is there a stripe on his back?

There is definitely a line, yes. When I see "stripe" I think dorsal stripe - pretty defined. But I think this one goes more along the lines of countershading.

JB... can't/shouldn't be countershading. His back is WHITE... or is supposed to be, looks it. I am so confused.

Here is a closeup of the mane where you can see it to some extent:

Sire is smokey grullo, dam is buckskin. Foal is smokey grullo.

Wow, he's tested already to be a smokey grullo? Interesting.

Yes, I know his back is supposed to be white I think there can be something about spinal hair (including mane and tail)that can be different. I think also this might be the "dorsal stripe" that some foals are just born with, which shed out with the first foal shed.

Normally I would love to say yes, but I don't think you are in this case.

LOL Travlng!

He is not tested yet JB but his eyes are the gray/blue of cream and his face and color is classic of grullo foals. His owner breeds specifically for grullo (and smokey grullo).

it looks like there are 2 actually
one starts about midneck just to the left of the mane and the other runs through the mane. The second one seems to merge with the first on the back... maybe its just really weird markings? Are you sure he didnt get into anything or didnt rub something?

correction it looks like there is 3 one on each side of the mane and one running through the mane. I am really starting to wonder if he got into something or rubbed something

I see it too, you're not blind! I'm wondering if it's just the pink skin showing through where the bone is more prominent (his spine)?
