I may have a Strangles outbreak!!!!!***UPDATE #2***

OK, everyone! I've had a couple of horses come down with a serious thick yellow drainage from their noses and they have become listless and are running fevers of 103 and 104.4! Vet just left, and he suspects Strangles! Neither one of the horses have swollen lymph nodes, but he didn't have the stuff with him to test them, so he's coming back out tomorrow to do the test. In the meantime, my place is on quarantine!!!

I've never known anyone who has had to deal with this before, so could you all tell me your experiences with it?

Oh, yea.....there have been no new horses or horse people here for a good 3 months....but that doesn't make alot of difference since I know that one of my rescues could just be a carrier of it. but then again, the vet said it usually takes 2-3 weeks after exposure to it for symptoms to appear.

What do you all think and what are your experiences with it?

my tb had it when I bought him. pretty much its like strep throat in a horse. most times the vet will just let it run its course. sometimes they will perscribe antibiotics but you have to be carefull with anti's as it can turn into b astard strangles if you stop the antis too early. once it hits the lymphnodes you can hot pack it to help it burst and drain then just keep it clean till its run its course. good luck

Cathy....there isn't any abcesses or swollen lymph nodes. Do you think it could still be strangles?

Thank You Cathy! I'm reading as you post them. I'm praying this isn't Strangles, but will deal with it if it is. **sighs**

I guess I'm having a hard time believing it is Strangles. My biggest question is...........HOW did they get it??? As I said before, there's been no new horses here for a good 3 months, nor anyone who owns horses. Of course, there's been a vet out to euthanize a horse, but even that was over 2-3 weeks ago when they would of supposedly been exposed. In fact, that was at the end of April, so well past the incubation period. I'm just stumped on this one!!!!!!!1
