I had a guy tell me yeaterday that he has a 2 year old that he wants to bring over here and expose it, so it can get it, and be done with it! Of course, I told him "NO"! I culdn't believe what I was hearing!!!!

Ick! I hope no one else gets sick. Don't get tempted to give any of them Strangles vaccinations during the outbreak as it increases the risk of severe reaction to the vaccine. And don't vaccinate the sick horse against it for at least a year---though chances are good that he won't need to be vaccinated against it for many years after being sick.

| Senior Member | Strangles isn't like the chicken pox; horses can get repeat infections. Having it does create a little resistance that will cover them for a while, but not for life.

While 75% of horses who get strangles will develop a long-lasting immunity, it's not something I would just expose horses to willy-nilly. The risk of complications like b*stard strangles, purpura hemorhagica, respiratory distress from severe infectin and creating chronic silent carriers are all just too major to make you just want to run out and get your horse sick with Strangles. That thinking is based on old beliefs and lack of understanding of how the disease spreads.
