I Lunged My Yearling!!

All by myself! I was so proud of him-he did awesome! So here is my story of lunging Jack!-

I turned him out in the round pen while I was with our other horse. After contemplating whether I was brave enough to go in there without his trainer (lol..our boarding barn owner!), I worked up the courage to just go for it!!! I walked in there with the whip; he came to me but as soon as I flicked the whip, out on the rail he went! I started trotting him and he was doing perfect. He sometimes cuts corners a little, but lunging is brand new to him, and we just bought him, so in about a month we are going to start really inforcing our commands. Everything was going great, so I decided to reverse! I said WHOA, as I stepped to my left to reach his shoulder, he stopped almost instantly! Then, I put the whip in my left hand and walked in front of him, and he reversed, then walked off!! I was amazed! So I went that way for a little while and then stopped him. He walked up to me, and I patted him.

I just cant believe how awesome he is. He has never really been worked with until we told our trainer we wanted him which was about 3 weeks ago. Before then, he was halter broke (somewhat), and was probably only led around 2 or 3 times ever, and pick up his hooves once or twice. Now, he lifts up his hooves like an old pro, stands quietly by the hitching post while I hold his lead rope, grooms nicely, leads good (except for when he wants to put his head on you!) fly sprays OK (we are working on this daily!) and tolerates a fly mask! I am so happy with him. I admit I was nervous at first because we have a 20 year old gelding who is bombproof, and here were are buying a yearling!! I was skeptical, but I knew the payoff would be huge. I just cant believe how lucky we are to have a real gem...in the works!

I wonder if anyone actually read this whole thing...

Just FYI.... lunging a baby can be harmful to thier development. You may want to reconsider this until he is older....

ROFL! My BAD!

Nah, he isnt too young at all. When you do a horse for a 4-H project you are lounging them about at 9 months. Its really not too early.

If you dont agree with me please dont jump on me for it. THANKS

I guess I was just wanting to caution her not to push him too hard too soon is all. I'm far from an expert, but I would just be careful with him.

Yes, I understand what you are saying. When you lounge them that soon, i only lounge for about 15-20 mins and most of it is at a trot.

You probably use a large round pen, too, correct?
