Unhappy I lost Maple's foal last night!!!:(

Well, this hurts to say, but last night Maple's foal didn't make it. I checked on Maple about 12:00 midnight and everything was normal. Then at 2:00 AM, I checked her again and there was a leg sticking all the way out of the mare. I could see part of an ear too.
Since this was our first foal, and none of us knew what to do, I called for help, but the nearest help was the stallion's owner, he was about 40 min away.
I tryed to get the leg back in and maybe reposition it while I was waiting, but the contractions were too strong for me. When they arrived, Mr. Hose (stallion's owner) spent 45 min. trying to work the foal around.

We ended up loading the horse and driving 45 min to a equine hospital at the racetrack. There, the vet spent 2 hours trying to reposition the foal and pull it out. The fluid by that point had really dried out, adding to the difficulty. The vet said that the foal position was uncommon (I think this was his forth one like that).

Apparently the foal's nose was locked down under the pelvic bone and the one leg was the opposite direction. Also the foal was very large, the vet, who was used to dealing with thouroughbred foals, was shocked at the baby's size. (Mare is thoroughbred, and sire was quarter horse, both about 15 hands, with stallion being the shorter of the two). Maple was two and a half weeks over due.

Anyway, the foal was long dead by the time we got it out . The vet said it probably died early in the labor due to the umbilical cord being pinched off or somthing.

The foal was a filly, and she looked just like her mother a deep, dark bay. She even had the maple leaf design on her forehead like Maple has. From the looks, the foal was all thoroughbred, very long body and legs (longer than a normal foal).

Anyway, this is hard for me, being my first foal and after I spent 11 months planning for it (it was going to be my foal). I never thought that this would happen to it! At least Maple made it through . That poor mare is so tired, we brought her home this afternoon.

I really wanted to be posting pictures of a healthy live foal instead of writing this!
