haha thats got to be a kicker, to have a beautiful dun who is stunning only to find out, it will turn grey. I know people who have sorrels and bays etc out of greys and pray for them to change, but I would be praying for the horse to remain a dun! If the grey modifier gene is not present she might just remain dun but if it is, she is doomed to be a grey. Since grey can mask any base color of a horse its likely the father was dun who greyed out.

That is why I always ask the color of the parents on a dun... Remember that gray will sometimes mimic dun factor with very loud primitive markings. Personally I wish people who had dun factored horses and roan horses would not breed them to gray. It would make life a lot less confusing.

If you see a horse with loud dun factor and no dun factored parent you better make sure there is not a gray stallion across the fence.

That is why breeders of color, whether it's pinto patterns, or appies, or dilutes (dun, creme, champagne, etc) stay far far away from gray.

Not always JB. There's a lot of people that do love their Grey Pintos and Paints and Aps. Look at Hezadlux's ex-stallion... he's a Grey Overo. I don't think being a kicker that they'll change to grey just goes for duns or dilutes, what about the people who wanted a black horse?

Maybe the Paint world is different? TB and WB breeders of color, those who make it their priority to breed pintos and dilutes, do not go to gray stallions.

Must be different then, because I know a ton of people that really could care less about the color of the stallion if he fits their needs. IF Grey affected a horse differently (say muddying the color, not just changing it) IE instead of a golden palomino you got a mealy palomino, then I could see it being a concern.

I would say that yes she looks like she is going gray.. they even say that she has a 50% chance of being gray... so you never know!

and again, i post... she is a greullo in my eyes. IF she was gray, her coat would be a little bit blacker ( i've raised a grey before). Shes got the brown hues to her, which usually is a sign of not being a grey. I dont think shes a dun, and i stand by my statement that she is a gruello
