Exclamation I just want the health certificate!!! Vent and question

Some of you may know that I sold my gelding a few weeks back to a very nice lady. All along we've planned to have her pick him up on Friday the 3rd (of August) and from there she was going to haul him to her new place in Tennessee. Just about 5 days ago she emailed me saying she would need a health certificate for Aiden because he'll be going out of state. I would have very much appreciated being told this before, since from that point we had a week to get the vet out.
The day after she said we would need a health certificate for him, we called the vet. Then the next day when our call hadn't been returned we called again. Now TOMORROW is the day she comes and picks him up and we STILL haven't had any calls returned from the vet and still NO health certificate! I really want Aiden to go to this woman, but if there's no health certificate she won't be able to pick him up for another month she said since she'll be in TN, but we need this horse gone NOW so that wouldn't work. At this point I'm figuring we'll have to track down a different vet somewhere and have to pay an extra $50 for a rush fee.
I'm really frustrated. I wish she had told me when she agreed to buy him 3 weeks ago that we would need a health certificate for him instead of waiting until we only had a week left to do it. What all is involved with getting a health certificate? Does the vet just do a simple exam on the horse and sign a paper stating the horse's health? If we rushed out a vet either today or sometime tomorrow before the lady came to get him, would that be enough time to have a health certificate completed?

Sorry I am confused... why would you think that you would not need a health certificate if you sold the horse? Does the horse have a current coggins?

You need a current coggins and the name of the new owner and the address and location that the horse will be hauled to to get the heath certificate. Often you can save money by hauling the horse to a vet to get the certificate. It takes less than 30 minutes to get. The vet basically just takes the horses temp. checks the heart rate and coggins... Grab a phone book and start calling vets til you get one IF you have a current coggins. If you do not have a current coggins the horse is not going anywhere.

If the coggins is current and the vet has seen the horse within the past few months, most vets (at least around here) will do a health certificate without having to see the horse. I just call and tell them I need a health certificate, let them know the address where I'm hauling to, and I can usually drop by their office a few hours later and pick it up- it just costs me $5.

HHF, I have only sold one horse before and the new owners didn't request a HC. We of course gave him his coggins papers and shot records, but that was it.
All the woman told me when she agreed to buy him is that she'd need his coggins papers and his shot records. That is no problem at all since they had everything done in May of this year. But just 5 days ago she emailed me and said she'd need a health certificate, which I hadn't been told before (and I'm really not experienced in selling horses like I said, so I didn't know he'd need a HC which I admit is dumb on my part). I'm just hoping we can track down a vet in time. All the vets around here don't have offices to haul to, and even then we don't have a trailer that we could use. I'm grabbing a phone book as I type!

So you or she has the coggins? You should have the coggins with you since you have the horse... You will need to coggins to get the health certificate.

Yes I have the coggins with me. This whole selling experience (while the buyer is a very nice lady) has been sort of frustrating. I'm desperately trying to find vets right now, and the experiences I've had with them is they don't return calls!

Well.. if you have the coggins.. get out that phonebook and start calling..

I'd have her pay for it though.. but that's me.

Oh PR she's already said that she's paying for it. I have a call into our usual vet, if he doesn't call back within an hour then we've got the numbers of several others that we'll call. Thanks for the help guys!

anytime I sell out a horse that is going out of state I provide the HC from MY vet to show the horse is healthy...

You SHOULD be able to leave you vet a message stating you need a HC and when you need it and then go and pick it up.. that is the way we ahve always done them anyway

Some vets as in your reg vet will sign you a health cert w/o seeing the horse. That would be your trusting vet that knows you know what your doing and knows you up keep your horses. It was 25 bucks for each from my vet and he has to see your neg coggins and I also take in shot records and he signs the health cert right there and hands you the white paper and you are on your way. You also have to take in your delivering persons name and address. Good luck!
