Angry I Just Called Animal Control!

My Husband and I dropped off some Computer Parts for a friend yesterday and I seen his horses for the first time. He has 2 Arabian horses the young gray horse was at a body condition of a 1 and the bay mare was a body condition of a 3.5! I told my husband that I feel bad doing it because he is a nice guy and is having money problems but there is no reason for anyone to let there horses get that bad . So I called AC and told her what was going on and the little gray horse needs help ASAP. I also told her that he is a really good guy and I understand the hay problems that people are having in North Carolina but she also agreed that he should not have let the horses get this way.

Do you think I did the right thing by calling knowing that he is having money problems??? I couldn't just pretend that I never seen them and I don't have the money to offer to buy them and send them to a rescue right now.

I will give updates when I talk to AC again.
Thank you for your inputs

yes you did the right thing.
just because someone is nice doesn't mean that an animal should suffer.

YES. If the guy has money problems he should re-home the horses. Instead of cutting corners with them. That's selfish.

Let us know how things go.

How do you KNOW that thier skinniness is attibuted to starvation? Did you offer your help? Did you ask him if he had medical issues with these horses? Did you do anything except run to the phone and dial?
Yes, its appalling when you see skinny horses, but what is worse is when someone is DEAD wrong about a horse - simply cause they never asked questions.

Did you mention to him how bad his horses look and that they are starving?
That's where my big mouth comes in handy cause I'll say almost anything. A guy I know did the same thing and a friend called me and said you have to come look at this horse. Well I did, and I took the horse without permission, called the guy when he got home from work and told him that his horse was now at my house. The vet was out and you bet he paid the bill. I talked him into selling the horse. Now my brother in law owns him. I don't recommend you do what I did. Cause actually I stole him and could of got into some trouble. But I couldn't leave him there either. So set your mind at ease you did the right thing. The horse will love you for it.

Peg made some great points! It's nice you have the horses best interest at heart but perhaps you should have let him explain himself first since he has been so nice to you and is a friend?

You did the right thing! If he can't feed his horses, then he should have found someone to take them....don't feel bad...

But how do you know the horse isn't just ill and is getting medical treatment?

If there's a reason for their body condition and the owner is doing what is necessary for the horses, he can provide that info to AC.

Some folks are not comfortable with confrontation. I would rather someone make a phone call, even if unnecessary, than to keep quiet and allow the suffering of an animal to continue.
