Ive had a visit or two from the SPCA, I was always very willing to show them around and chat with them.
I had nothing to hide, and like you I was relieved that people were doing their jobs.

The OP did the right thing. If there are any extenuating circumstances, the owner will be able to clear them up, if they are legit.

Exactly, thank you for agreeing with me. Like you said, if there is nothing to hide, than what is the problem?

you should NEVER EVER EVER feel ashamed to make a phone call to AC.

AC is there for a reason. They will look into the situation and within their power, do something.

many times, just having them show up is enough to wake some owners up.

others will find out their options (such as signing their animals over for free to AC)

And others need a good swift kick in the butt literally.

Many people brush off friends and family. however it is hard to brush off the law.

I personally am glad to see AC once in a blue moon when I do have a case that is new/situation with my horse. However, over and over and over from the same person when there ISN"T an issue....that is annoying.

Makes me feel like they themselves ARE investigating, and hopefully will nab those doing wrong. I have no problems handing AC my information, to my vet, records, feeding bills, etc.

I agree, kudos to you. Even if it does turn out to be 'explainable' (which given the background story, that's not likely), you know that you did your 'civil duty'. Many people (even 'horse lovers') would have turned their eyes and ignored it.

I've never had AC called on my horses. But I've had them called countless time on a dog that I had. It was very irritating, yes. But it never really bothered me. As it was nice to know that strangers cared, even if they were 'wrong'. It got to where AC wouldn't even come out when they were called about him. They'd call us, just to verify that it was us and the same dog, and that was it.

Background story was that, due to 'neighbor' issues, he was being kept at my dad's business. He was always either inside (contained away from customers) or out in a kennel. (With adequate shelter and shade.) Now this dog loved to dump his water. We tried everything trying to keep him from doing it, but it never worked. So we just watered him every hour or so. He'd get a drink, then dump it out. So that's usually what the calls were about, no water. There were some other more outlandish claims. But still.

Hopefully the AC does look into your complaint and takes appropriate action.

You did the right thing. If there are meical conditions that need to be addressed perhaps the owner needs help. If they have already been adressed the authorities will find out. Perhaps he needs to be informed of how bad the situation realy is. It's possible the owner will be relieved of the horses and it will be a load off of his mind to know they will be in helpful hands.

I would question the fact that the owner is in contriol.. why? Because if they were my horses and I saw no improvement, I would question every person I came in contact with that owns a horse for options/ contacts/ experience...etc. INCLUDING the animal control.

you did the right thing.
my husband is an ac.
he would much rather go out on a call and be wrong then not know about it until they couldnt help.
if any animal is under vet care all the owner has to do is show the info. no big deal they move on.

I gauss you wouldn't call him a friend but he is someone we know and have helped out. When he wanted his gun fixed my husband and I fixed and cleaned the gun and stored it for a year and only charged him $10 Then he wanted parts to build his own computer and wanted my husband to help him put it together, we only charged him $100 for everything (Thats a darn good price if you know the cost of computer parts). That is when I seen the horses, they are pastured in a 3 acre field with no grass and There was NO Hay! He does not have a vet for the horses so I know it is not a medical problem that has been seen.
Well my Husband is calling for my help :P If you have any more questions let me know and I will try to answer then the best I can

Thank You everyone this has really made me feel better about calling AC.

You did the right thing!
It does not matter what other people think.
Sometimes when we are close to a situation it is better to let an outside source handle it.
So as not to cause spite. Since you know him and have helped him in the past and continue to do so.
It is better to let AC handle it for sure. GOOD JOB!
They will be able to educate him on what he is doing wrong and if medical attention is needed and he is more apt to listen to them than you possibly...
Sometimes if there is no malice on the horse owners part than they will try to work with the owner. So again GREAT JOB!

I think it's better to let the authorities deal with this kind of problem. You never know how the owner could react.
