see, I agree with JBR again, I think NH is a common sense communication style between human and horse and those who truly practice it,believe in its merit etc will all tell you it is NOT something new nor is it a miracle drug lol Like the wiggle the rope comment. If a horse is invading my space I'm gonna wiggle the rope then increase it if necessary BUT if I have some idiot on the end of it who is trying to run me over I assure you he'll be lucky if I wiggle before he sees all heck break loose LOL |

I agree with you 100% ![]() I don't hate natural horsemanship. I think it's really really cool. What I hate is the people who have roundpenned their horse a couple of times and suddenly think they're an expert and FLAUNT it It's a cool thing, really it is. It can work too. However...the maniacs that take it over and use it like a religion really get on my nerves |

I'm sorry you feel that way, and that was rude of that lady to do that. But I don't think that had anything to do with NH. A lady came up to me out of the blue one day and tried to take my dog's leash out of my hands to "show" me something. That wasn't cool either. There are know it alls everywhere you go. With NH being so accessible to so many people, a lot of people think they know what they're doing when they don't. That being said, NH is not all "let's be super nice to our horses!" It's more like training that makes sense to the horse. We build our training like a ladder. If a horse isn't getting something, maybe some rungs are missing. I will definitely get after my horse for misbehaving, but I've found that the more solid the foundation, the less you have to. That's JMO though |

| Senior Member | Natural Horsemanship is all good and well, but, if you can get the same message across, with the same efficiency and outcome, faster with a smack rather than whatever NH does for that same problem, why bother with NH?

| Senior Member+ | I don't do NH and the training makes sense to the horses. IF the horse is having a hard time understanding then we take a step back to make sure its comfortable doing the lower exercises that lead up to more complicated things. |

NH is a bunch of marketing phooey. People have just cashed in on the training that people have been doing for YEARS. Someone just slapped a name on it, called it the 'great, new method' and it went from there.

Interesting thread... I think some NH techniques are great for young, relatively untouched, or abused horses, but IMO once the horse knows better, discipline is sometimes necessary. I was at a recent family gathering and met a distant relative (by marriage, not by blood) that really laid into me about putting my ex-racehorse through classical dressage training. She suggested I contact a certified NH trainer instead...I politely told her that I've seen a lot of progress in the last few months with classical training, and I appreciate that the progress is being made in the saddle. [I just don't have the time or funds for 2 years of ground work!!! (Of course, I'm exaggerating, so don't flame me...)] |

Your horse should be a "Happy Slave".

I do not do Natural Horsemanship. The only clinic of any type of "natuaral" would be Clinton Anderson and to me a dont consider him a full on natural horsemanship trainer. I like that he gets after the horses when they just blow off your warning. No offence to anyone that is Parelli lovers but I really hate his methods. Ive seem horse after horse having no respect to other people if they dont do it the "parelli way". Yes I smack my horse if it bites me or runs me over, there are other ways of disapline that are perfectly fine.
