Start like you are going to band the mane, I usually take a 3 inch section. Then split this 3 inch section down the center of the mane (horizontally lengthwise with the mane) and take a small section out of the middle of your 3 inch section. What you are doing is leaving a thick enough top layer, and thick enough bottom layer, that when you thin out the middle, that it will cover the thinned out section and will lay flat -along with not giving you too much hassle in regards to thickness. This always works great for thinning my gelding's mane out (my old trainer insisted on pulling, and I cannot pull his mane, even gradually without him getting shy about me banding his mane.) My bands are roughly 1/2inch in width, and he has a rather thick mane. If this isn't clear enough let me know, and I will try and explain it better.
