i found scars...

Cabeza finally finished shedding out. he's the mustang gelding i got from a rescue last fall, and this is the first time i've seen him without his winter coat. as i was grooming him i saw several large scars on his belly under the girth area. i hadn't notice before because he was so fuzzy, and the only way to see them is to stick your head right under his belly, which i didn't trust him enough to do before. the thing that pops into my head first is that he was abused, but i hate to jump to that because people are always crying "abuse!" all the time for little things, and i think the word is way overused. he has never acted like he was abused, but it's a little hard to tell because he hadn't been handled all that much and he is still skittish. it's just so frusterating, because all i can think of are all the bad ways it could have happened. since he is a mustang i'm afraid it may have occured by someone trying to take short cuts in training him. he hasn't been trained thourougly, and it's obvious that whoever did it was just trying to make him ridable and didn't worry about anything else. it makes me so sad and angry to think of someone mistreating him! i just needed to vent...

Since he is a mustang, it would make sense (to me) that these are battle scars from his previous life as a stallion in the wild.

Abused horses will rarely carry scars.

That is sad I hope that he was not abused and that the scares are just from being in the wild.

My guess is those scars are from fighting over some mares with another stallion..

If he is a wild mustang he would not have been abused by humans.

i hope those scars are from just being out in the wild- it would be pretty upsetting if someone did do that because they were trying to make him ridable- well i wish the best for him...

Dex has some battle scars too & I know for a fact he was never abused. They're just from fighting while he was in the wild.

i know the scars most likely aren't abuse, it just frustrates me that that's all i can think of since they are right under the girth area. and i didn't adopt him from the BLM, i got him from a rescue that saved him from slaughter by getting him at auction. they tried to contact the guy who sold him, but he refused to talk to them so i don't have his papers or anything. i think he was captured young, so i'm not sure that it would be from fighting over mares, but my guess is that it did happen while he was in the wild.

If they aren't from the wild they could be from spurs... But I dunno. It seems more like they are just battle scars.

Thumbs up

I hope they are just from fighting in the wild. Dusty has scars on her stomach from being whipped from on top of her onto her stomach. They think it was either the reins or a whip. I hope that's not what happend to Cabeza, but I doubt it is anyway. Good luck with him.

Talking

I was thinking that they may be scars from living in the wild with other horses, but it was already said, lol
