| Senior Member+ | I found a feed I'd like to try-opinions
It's a feed by purina mills. It's relatively newish, I think. It is a sweet feed, but they 'cook' their molassis (sp?) differently to decrease the amounts of starch and sugars in the mix. I have also been reading on how these things are not BAD for the horse- in checked amounts of course. It is a complete feed, made for breeding, growing and performance horses. The name of it is "Horseman's Edge", What do you guys think?~Brit

A certain amount of sugar and starch is good Cooking breaks down the "matrix" of the starches and sugars, making it more readily available to the upper digestive track. When these are bad, is when undigested starches and sugars, in large amounts, reach the hindgut where the microbes are.

It would be nice to see the nutritional listings and ingredients of the feed.

Remember that calling a feed "complete" means that you have to feed the usually very LARGE amount they recommend in order to get the "guarunteed" levels.

I know what it's called now. Horseman's Edge. Heard of it? yay, nay? Let me tell you guys what I do with my horses, then decide. The one's who would be switched to it from the 'cheap' stuf (reliance) are firefly- my appendix mare who does light competition (barrels, trails, gives a few lessons weekly), the two shetlands, who do a lot of lessons, pony parties, same kind of light competition (only...lighter. They don't run as hard as Fly) and the 1/4 of sweet feed I mix with my yearlings triple crown growth would be replaced by that feed. It's more economical and easy to feed, because when I'm not there I depend on an 83 y/o man to feed for me!

oh, and the shetlands don't really need feed, they get plenty of forage, but they are both on msm for healthy joints, so I'd like to give them enough to mix it in twice daily.

Honestly, the ponies and minis need to stay off of it. You risk too much with their little sensitive, laminitis prone bodies.

but is eating fescue grass going to be enough? And what should I feed them to mix in their joint supplements? Shadow's been on the cheap stuf for over 20 years, never had colic, founder or any problems. ever. The three year old hasn't YET, and I wanna keep him that way. I don't think a small handful once a day will hurt, will it?

Horseman's Edge has been around for a good while, both the sweet feed and the pelleted feed, unless there is a new variety. It's not something I'd feed my horses. Is grass or hay enough? Depends on the horse. How are their body weights and how much are they getting now? I agree ponies and minis don't need any grain, period. We've been over grain alternatives to mix supplements with on your other threads You seem to be stuck on the idea of feeding grain
