*Sigh* this is the result of informal terms for colors. Definitely, she is inarguably a bay roan, no doubt. A bay horse with the roan modifier. However, there are so many silly terms for roans, that it's hard to keep them straight. Chestnut roans are often referred to as strawberry and red roans. Bay roans are often referred to as strawberry, blue, and red roans. Black roans are often referred to as blue and lilac roans. I can see how this mistake happened; somebody considered bay roans to also be referred to as red roans. "Red roan" doesn't really mean anything, the correct term is chestnut roan. |

I had a bay roan pony, and she looked like your mare, black legs, mane and tail....she lightened up in the winter, and darkened up in the winter...I leased a strawberry roan, who had a chestnut and white mane and tail, and 4 high white socks.....Cathy

Used to be that Chestnut/Sorrel roans were called Strawberry Roans and Bay roans were often called Red Roans. Now it is more usual that people call Chestnut/Sorrel Roans Red Roans and Bay Roans are usually called Bay Roans though some still call them Red Roans too. Black and Gray Roans are often called Blue Roans. I think it would be more correct if the colors were referred to more correctly as the true base color plus the word roan. Chestnut Roan Bay Roan Gray Roan Black Roan etc. Not to mention that many non roan horses sometimes get referred to as roans...such as some sabinos, apps, flea bitten grays etc. Horse colors are very confusing and I have seen even very expert horse people who don't name all their colors correctly. So anyway, if I were you I would try to get her registered color changed to Bay Roan as that is the most correct term for her color.

Yea, I agree that it is from the red-base; however, in everyday use, red and strawberry are used so interchangably for different things (chestnut and bay roans) that it can be confusing. Just like how QH people apparently prefer the term sorrel for any red-based QH, but everybody and their brothers have different meanings for the words sorrel and chestnut. But yea, I'd definitely consider red roan, bay roan, and blue roan to be legit terms, it would just be nice if everyone used them for the same things. |

The fact that bay roan was only a color choice in the last few years is why so many bay roans are incorrectly listed. Color genetics have often been incorrect on breed papers which is further hampered by owners using terms that are not genetically correct or in agreement with color choices per registeries. This is all the more reason terms like strawberry roan should no longer be used. Much like the term silver grullo, which should also no longer be used since there are now several AQHA/APHA horses with the "z" silver gene... which might also be grullo in color. RED roan should be the ONLY term used to describe a red based roan... regardless if it is chestnut or pale strawberry with bright flaxen mane and tail. Bay roan for all bay horses that are roan. Blue roan for a black horses that are roan. There is no reason for there to be any question on the genetic colors as they can all now be tested for any base coat. There is no test for roan but the color will be obvious and there must be a parent which also has the gene. The other BIG problem with roans is that many grays are listed as roan and the papers are not corrected to gray. A gray sabino paint may resemble a blue roan to an un-trained eye that also does not look at the parents. A gray horse cannot produce a roan offspring unless the gray horse also has a roan parent. Any horse that is a gray roan should be listed as gray instead of roan... the gray will wipe out the roan. |

Thank you everyone for the educational posts. I knew she wasn't a red roan, I just couldn't believe that I said "red roan" on her papers! I'm going to send in plenty of pictures with her papers when I switch them to my name. I need new copies anyways, hers are pretty worn from being folded and someone had tape on it at one time, as well.
