Don't fret Jess. WAY too many breeders don't know nearly as much as they want to think about color genetic and what you can and can't get with certian colored parents. Just call AQHA and they will walk you through what you need to do. They're really nice folks.

Thanks. She does have a smudgy white star, but she has staples over it in that picture with yucky wound ooze on it so it's not that noticeable.

Hopefully I can get it changed without a problem.

Plus Suri has a faxen mane and tail....which I personally hope never turns red....

Bay roan is and has FREQUENTLY been called red roan.
  • Quote:
Bay Roan Begins genetically with a bay base coat, giving a roan horse a reddish coat but black mane and tail, with dark "points" (ears and lower legs). The head will usually be red, with a black forelock. Bay Roans are sometimes also called red roans. [1]

Quote:
TERMINOLOGY: RED OR BAY ROAN? RED OR STRAWBERRY ROAN?
Genetically, the roan gene can act on any of the base colors. Roan on black is called Blue Roan; But from there it gets confusing - conventional terminology and various breed registries define the colors differently. Some say that if the horse has ANY red on it (like a black with gold muzzle from the pangare effect) it is a red roan. Some say that a red roan is Roan on a Red Base. Others call this same effect a Strawberry Roan.
Since color terminology is not standardized, you can choose whichever terms you want. It is important to understand, however, that others may be using the terms differently.

Bay roans have the black points and red/brown faces of "regular" roans, but additionally their bodies are colored by a mix of red and white hairs (and maybe black hairs, too, if other factors are present).
Many people call these "Red Roans" - I have used the term "Bay" because it is accurate genetically, and avoids confusion with Strawberry Roan, which can also be called "Red Roan."

This does not look like a red roan to me. Are her papers wrong or do I have the wrong horse? Don't red roans have sorrel manes and tails?

She looks like a bay roan to me too.

Could it be that she looked more like a red roan as a foal and got registered that way??

I agree with everyone else.

Registries mess up colors ALL the time.

Ya know, she may have been registered correctly at the time registered. I have had a foal before that was almost a red color, but by time she shed out her foal coat she was brown underneath. Look at her papers, look at date born, then the date the registry registered her.... her breeders may have sent in the papers when she was only a month or two old...... never know.
