I finally talked to her first owner/breeder in Ireland! What a nice lady! Turns out she only sold her 6 years ago but it was not to the last person listed on her papers. So that's another missing link to find. She's going to try to get me photos of her when she was younger and also of the last filly she had out of her who is in Northern Ireland. She was asking different things to make sure we were talking about the same horse and she asked if she had any marks (scars). I told her there was one on her back leg. She knew right then it was her. The day that Rose was born they went out to the field and knew her dam had foaled but they couldn't find Rose anywhere. They finally found her struggling in a river she'd fallen into and the scar came from a wound on a metal barrel that had been floating and cut her as she struggled. She made it through that and lived a fairly happy life as a broodmare in Ireland. No one is sure what happened after she was imported to the US but we know she was trained to ride (at least from what we've been told, I think the past owner confirmed she HAD been ridden but she was never broke while she was in Ireland).

Now at least I know something about her. I emailed photos to the first owner and we're going to keep in touch. Thanks everyone for your help in teaching me how to call. This really made my day to know at least her life hasn't always been terrible and someone did love and care for her at some point. I felt bad because by the womans voice you could tell she was heartbroken over what had happened to her but also kept telling me how glad she was that I had her now and she had a good home to live out her days in.

dear lord..
I am so glad you found her.

when I first saw your post, my thoughts were rescue - Irish Draft not really possible.. Like an oxymoron, that in my mind it would be impossible for a mare of that type of breeding to end up looking like this.

As sad as it is I think it serves as a perfect example that this can happen to ANY horse. It made that thought really hit home for me. I know her first owner sure never thought she'd end up like this, she said the people who bought her from her seemed to really care about horses. How then let her go to someone who would let her end up like this is beyond me.

It does serve as a shocking reminder to us all. No matter the breed, the horse, or the pedigree...
