I am so disgusted!

Well, I just gt back from our local horse auction which runs every other month. It is primarily amish, so the drafts and standardbreds go through first. Those brought average prices, sound racehorses for $1500-$4000. The disgusting part was for the saddle horses and ponies. I have never seen such a sorry group of misfits as was brought this time. They were priced accordingly, ranging from $35.-$500. One reg. AQHA 11 mo. old colt could not even get a $10. bid, and he was one of the good looking ones! There were quite a few decent looking QH types, ridden through, who only brought $250. each. Someone brought a bunch of reg. young saddlebred mares who were hog fat, one 3 yr old and two 6 yr olds with foals by side. The mares sold for $300-$400 and the foals for $100-$125. It is a very sad world right now and anyone who is breeding better not be looking to make a profit on the offspring!

yep but the really sick thing? Our government is trying to auction off a few hundred horses with bids starting at $125 ($225 apair) at some auctions and $25 at other local auctions and continue to round up more wild horses (such as the slated 948 head removal in Wyoming) even though current auction house prices are bringing sad and pathetic bids and more and more NB (who wind up going to slaughter at prices of $1 for legal tender logs to prove they didn't steal the animals on their truck after the sale). It's sick and disgusting. As a horse lover and long time trainer I really can't stand back and watch this continue. I'll be at a production sale in October that's selling 57+ amazing ranch horses with bloodlines to kill for and I GUARANTEE you the high bid will be sickening low and many horses will either NB or go for pennies. This production sale is a result of the economy going south. Not because the Ranch owner is looking to make a buck.

Horse prices have been in the dumps for nearly 2 years, why is anyone breeding anything, good or bad? Yes, there are parts of the country and some breeds that seem to be holding there own, but...... if no one bred, for one full season, I believe some of this would mello out. The horses that are getting good prices are well trained in the desired disepline, not the everyday, backyard horse, whether registered or not.

Iwish people would hold off on breeding to,the other thing that helps cause too many foals each yr is the pmu foals.they turn out how many foals a yr??we have some shipped in here and sold as a production sale.it's very sad, there arn't enough buyers for what they bring in.the last couple yrs there have been less and less people going.not sure if they even held the sale this yr,as the barn burned down last yr,and has just been rebuilt.I don't see the need to breed my mare,if I want a foal I can buy one for cheaper than the stud fee,get the bloodlines I want the color, and not have to stress about my mare haveing problems foaling.

We have an amish auction every friday nite and horses, among other farm animals are auctioned off. They go from about that price also. Most never go above 300 dollars.

That and there is no way you can convince people to stop breeding for a year. That is like leading a horse to water and making it drink. BYB's are set in their ways and top breeders aren't going to go for that.

Junk at the local sale barn, yep agree with you. But production sales of good horses, even the weanlings who don't know anything, they still bring what their "reputation" deserves.

Pitzer just had their fall sale. Check out the averages and the list of all sale prices.

http://www.thepitzerranch.com/horsesales.php

On the all sales page, from #1 up to 499 are Pitzer ranch bred horses, from #500 to 700 are "consignment horses of Pitzer breeding". Out of the entire 700 head (of which most were weanlings) only 115 sold for under $500. Out of the Pitzer 499, only 36 sold for under $500 and only 17 others sold for under $1000, the rest went well over that.

Pretty good when "ranch horse weanlings" averaged over $1000 and Yearlings studs averaged $1814.

Great prices? Nope, but still making back their stud fee plus some when you look at the fact that the majority of these horses were above average horses and their prices, no the relative few that brought the average down.

Not in the 4 corner area were in! I know a few good breeders that went from getting 2k for a weanling to not be able to get 1k. People aren't buying like they were. I got 2 nice well bred yrlgs QUALITY from a local auction. I could sales prep them and take them to a cutting sale and get around 1500 each min. I've seen some nice well bred horses go thru the acutions and I've also seen those horses be the top sale of the night for what use to be 3-5k now go for 2k. Most generally these days your average people don't wants to feed a yrlg or weanling for a yr or 2 plus training so the go dirt cheap!

I think that was part of my point. $2000 is good but, 2 years ago that same horse my have brought $4000. 'Good' colts may have brought $1000, but are bringing less than $500. I've seen good, registered stock weanlings go for $25 to $50. Does that mean these people are getting back their investment? I doubt it, quite seriously. Look through the sale sites. Broodmares are practically going for nothing, because they've never done anything but raise babies. Few people will take on a 10 year old mare that's never had a saddle on her back. Feed lots full of young, decent looking, yearlings and 2 year olds, that will be heading to Canada and Mexico.
One year out of a lifetime. No one will go broke. If they do, they probably shouldn't be in the buisness. Give the ones already here a chance at a decent home or a training program to make them more maketable to the public.
