If you want to educate people and get the info out there the best way do it and do it correctly is send them to the UC Davis web site or AQHA web site. Both have the FACTS and are correct with no bias added in. Just the facts. It also give you the info to test the horses as needed.

The facts are correct, many of them came FROM the UC Davis site. And the rest is from experience working with NH and HH horses. ALSO there is a company that does HYPP tests about $10 cheaper so I am not going to recomend anyone to UC Davis for testing just because AQHA requires it. If they have a Paint or Appy or mutt they want tested they can PM me and I will help them get it arranged.

Yay, a thread on HyPP!
My mare has is. She's N/H. Like sooo many HyPP owners, I found out about a year after I bought her, when I fed her a carrot dipped in molasses [yes... weird combo, I know, but she seriously LOVES both... and together, she'll drool an ocean for it, haha]. It was the day before my very first show ever, she I was giving her a bath about an hour after I fed her the treat, and I noticed her cheek quivering, but... I had no idea that that's what HyPP looked like so I kept wrinsing her down, and pretty soon, her whole body was quivering. Ofcourse, I went into panic mode realising it was HyPP, and called my mom, who called the vet, who told us to run up to the store and get Karo syrup, and put some bute in with half a cup of the stuff and give it to her. She was fine within the hour.

Another time, she was attacking pretty bad, so we took out her hay, and I was going to give her Karo, but my mom decided to see if it would go away on its own. For those of you familiar with the disease, 9 times out of 10, it won't go away, it just get's worse. Well... my horse was sleeping with her muzzle resting on the bottom of her feed bucket, and she went straight down. She collapsed, and didn't have time to get her head out of the bucket, therefore was being choked by the edge of the bucket. Eventually with her head's dead weight resting on it, it cracked and broke off the wall and she was able to breathe. It was the scariest thing in the world. Her face was completely stiff, but you could just see the panic and fear in her eyes. Her whole body was like... rippling. If you've ever seen an attack, imagine it 10 times more powerful, and all over the body.

The saddest part was when she was coming out of it, and was trying to get back up. Her front end was the first part of her body to come back, so ofcourse, she threw her front feet on the grounds like horses do when they get up from a roll, and rocked herself back to launch up, but her back end was still paralysed, and she fell over sideways again, and thrashed around. Out of no where her back end came to, and she kicked the wall accidentally, but then... like flew up off the ground like "holy ****! what in the world just happened!"

The reason I'm telling you this is because I know some people who just nod off HyPP but it's a serious thing.

There are SO many things that will/can set off a symptomatic horse.
Aside from the obvious diet restrictions... my horse is 99% guaranteed to attack if:
I ride her too close to dark, or in the dark.
I don't cool her off enough, and then rinse her down.
If we go on a trail alone.
If she's let out to pasture with other horses and gets to romping around.
If she doesn't drink a **** load of water.
If something stressful happens to her, her cheek starts going.
If she misses her meds.
When the weather changes from hot to chilly.
When the time change happens, and it gets darker earlier.
If she's around a stud, or a studly gelding, and goes into heat, she'll sometimes attack in her cheek a little.
If she gets spooked in her stall [but only her stall... if she spooks in the pasture, she just runs it off.]
If she gets extremely excited/nervous.
When she's in pain.
If you try to clip her ears without a twitch.
If she gets a knot in her muscle [once I pinched her with the girth roller by accident, and she flinched, contracted the muscle, and then it just started it's quivering].
The list goes on.

Bottom line, it's a pain in the a$$ to deal with, and an incredibly unfortunate disease. Plus, you're looking at a dramatically shorter life expectancy.

Do you keep karo in stock? I have only watched an HYPP attack once and it was very strange. I wish the best for you and your mare

We probably have more Karo on hand than Publix LOL.
She's also on 1,250 mg of Acetazolamide a day, which is a diuretic, so that helps.

Wow! Not smarttt.
My mare gets a type of sweet feed called All Grain, but it barely has anything to it. You just have to do your research as far as what to feed, and what's in everything. It deffinitely opened my eyes to the world of equine nutrition!

Oh trust me I know! And this idiot is the reason the colt was HH to begin with. He bred an NH mare to an NH stud just because his other 'good' stud was her sire. He had no reason to even bred the mare... ugh. But I'm glad you are keeping up with the nutrition and everything. It really can help alot.

Well... now he doesn't even remember what a halter is... I don't think he MEANT to breed to NH horses he just forgot. He had a brain tumor removed and has been fighting brain cancer... but STILL. He doesn't even want horses any more...so he should NOT be breeding them.
