hunters and horses

Seriously, I'm about to be sick. Okay, well we all know that I am from a big hunting family and love hunting. 90% of the hunters I know are extremely responsible. However, right now I am seriously disgusted. My brother's friend, Jesse, lives off the highway near our home. Him and his mother were out feeding horses the other day and noticed that his little 11 year old brother's horse was missing. They are out in a huge pasture, but the horses usually stick close to the house this time of year because of lack of grass and that's where they get fed.

They walked the fenceline and down by the highway they found his brother's horse. His left front hoof have been shot off and his shoulder/leg had been shot 3 more times. The horse was still alive, but could only lift his head. His mother went into hysterics and Jesse had to take her into the house while he had to grab the shot gun and put poor Dunn out of his misery.

I am apalled, absolutely apalled!!! How could somebody do this?? This was such an amazing little horse! He was a little QH gelding that Jesse's 11 year old brother used in Jr. Rodeos for roping, barrel racing, etc...and I mean this horse was amazing. The family adored him, he was a favorite in the area. I coached this child on this horse this summer (I coached 4-H this summer for rodeo grand entries) and could not have met a better kid's horse. Him and Joel were such a great match, this kid adored his horse. I'm just in tears this is so aweful.

Tonight my mother got a phone call from her friend (who also lives on the high way) and one of their horse's was shot a few days ago as well!!! I just can't beleive it! We were always STRICTLY taught to NEVER shoot at anything unless we were sure that it was a deer (or moose, coyote, etc...). Anybody who can not have that much common sense should NOT be hunting. And do LEAVE the horse there, to bleed to death for the family to find!! That's absolutely disgusting! I am SO appalled and angry!!!

No they shouldn't, this is a great example of why idiots shouldn't be allowed to have guns. But unfortunatly there is no test for that when you register a gun.

I feel so bad for that poor horses being in that much pain for so long...

That's miserable. I agree....it's a shame that any idiot can get a gun. We don't even turn out horses out during hunting season here. (deer season.) That's why I'm always thankful when Sunday rolls around...no hunting. Although, they are trying to change that, too. Somedays I wonder about the world....

I know I just feel so horrible for that horse. He could have been out there for 3 or 4 hours like that! The family was at a hockey game all afternoon. They checked the horses at noon before they left, and then came home to that. I am just thankful that poor little Joel didn't find his beloved horse like that. He is upset enough as it is, that would have just been traumatizing for him.

I know, it's such a shame. Seriously the registry here in Canada does nothing. Any idiot can still buy a gun. Anybody can register it, it's not like they are tested or anything. It's so useless.

My mother said a bunch of hunters from New Orleans were in her store the other day (we get lots of hunters from the States up here) yapping about how they were shooting at deer out the window of their truck without getting out...She's just like "You do realize that's illegal right?" and they just stared at her dumb-founded. It wouldn't suprise me if these were idiots who shot the horse.

How horrible and sad! What sort of sick, twisted person does something like that?!

I hate to sound morbid, but this does NOT sound like a hunting accident! A single or two shot MAYBE, but the horse was shot FOUR times? And another horse shot earlier in the week? You may have some people with problems on your hands that are getting their kicks by doing this. I would report this immediately if you have not already so that other owners can get their horses inside and safer if possible.

There was something similar happening in Kentucky a few years ago. Some little idiot kid got a shotgun or something for his birthday and for some deranged reason spent the next three weeks driving around near Thoroughbred farms SHOOTING horses from the street for no reason! I believe he killed two or three and seriously hurt several more. Even worse, he got off with a slap on the wrist because he was a juvenile.

I hope it really was just an accident, but really do be careful and make sure people know what happened so that it can be prevented!

That's so scary!! Well I know that Jesse's family did report what happened to their horse. I'm not sure about my mother's friend, but I imagine she would have. I'll have to ask. I seriously hope it was accidents...it's sick enough that some idiot would just leave that horse their to bleed to death slowly because they're too scared they'll get in trouble, but to do that to an animal on purpose...oh man that's just sick beyond beleif.

I agree with S.Horsewomen. This does not sound like hunters. To have that many shots, plus the hoof. You might want to get the police involved with it.
Although we have had hunters on our land that have shot, killed the deer, took of the antlers, and then left the body.. 3 times... this was years ago though...

Any body/carcus that is found should be reported to the police, not only are they shooting but they are tresspassing.

horrible.. and i sit with the camp who thinks it wasnt an accident... usually people who hurt animals for fun and torture move up the food chair to other people... that is why slapping a juvinile on the wrisy=t for torturing cats and dogs is just begging for trouble later...
