Hunter Show.. how should our turn out be??

Ok...
Whats the typical dress for a hunter rider???
Im going to guess khaki riding breeches and a white long sleeve shirt and a show jacket? And tall boots and helmet???
And how should your hair be?

And the horse:
How should his mane and tail be?
What kind of saddle does the typical Hunter rider use? Close Contact??
And whats the typical stirrup length? (I would guess when your leg is out of the stirrup the bottom of the stirrup hits your ankle bone).

Help needed... desperately.
Thank you!!!
Oh and if you read this post, could you maybe read my other post about hunter shows?

doesn't HAVE to me long sleeve, but if jackets are waived, you do need a sleeve. and it doesn't have to be white either. i have blue shirts.
And how should your hair be?
either in a hairnet tucked under your helmet, or in a hair net clip like this:

hared to see, i know.

And the horse:
How should his mane and tail be?
schooling show - neatly pulled (fairly short), i usualy don't worry about the tail too much. i do actually brush it tho. lol
rated - braided
What kind of saddle does the typical Hunter rider use? Close Contact??
yup, close contact. i don't think i've ever seen someone used an AP saddle.
And whats the typical stirrup length? (I would guess when your leg is out of the stirrup the bottom of the stirrup hits your ankle bone).
what it should be, yep.

Help needed... desperately.
Thank you!!!

wow... picture and everythin! THANK YOU!!
Ok, so i think my hair is going to have to be like how it is in that picture, cuz i think i have too much hair to shove in my helmet! lol

OH thats another thing... what kind of helmet do you typically use? I have 2 helmets, a velvet helmet, and an Aegis helmet, like this one:
not me, just to show the helmet.

Because i know most people would say to show in the velvet helmet... but this ones much more comfortable!!! lol So can I show in this one???

Ok, and a pulled mane for my horse. Sounds good.
The tail, I dont have to do anything? Not that I could, my horse scratches the top of his tail and he has very little hair there.
And any color shirt short sleeve with a jacket, or long sleeve. They probably would waive the jacket, seeing as how we are in South Florida... VERY hot!!!!

Im not going to a show TOO SOON. Ill probably be going to one in November or December or somewhere around there, i havnt decided yet. I just know that im going to one or a few. And i figured id get all the info I could ahead of time, that way if i needed to work on anything or get anything, id have plenty of time to do it.
I need to get tall boots. they are soo expensive.
Any recommended brands?
Do you HAVE to ride in tall boots? Because I rather enjoy riding in my paddock boots with Half chaps!

What color tack would you put on a black horse???
Almost all my tack is red.... BUT my close contact saddle is brown so that wouldnt look very nice!
What kind of pads do you use? Usually I just use an all purpose square pad. Is that alright? I think ill get a fleece half pad to go over that.
Or would a fitted pad be better?
And what tack would you even use??? Apart from the saddle and bridle. As far as, like boots and stuff.
If your doing really low level stuff. I have jumping boots (they are the only boots I have that fit him) Big foot.
But I also find I like to ride with bell boots because he overreaches and clips his front feet...
What would you do?
Wow... (total beginner!!)
I never knew i knew so little!
Lol... its not that I dont know a lot, its just that most things i need reaffirmed.. JUST in case im wrong.
THank you thank you thank you!!!

Yup, that would work, although a white shirt isn't necessary Any other subtle color would work just fine. I usually show in a peach or a mint green shirt. If it typically gets REALLY hot, get a long sleeved shirt in case they don't allow jackets. Otherwise a short sleeved shirt will be cooler under a jacket. Even if they don't require jackets but it's optional, I would suggest wearing it.

And how should your hair be?
Hair should be under the helmet. I used to have realllyyyy long hair that my mom would braid and I tucked it down my jacket, but unless it's crazy long, try your best to get it under your helmet secured with lots of pins/clips and a hair net.

And the horse:
How should his mane and tail be?
Pulled if it's thick, and braided. Always braid

What kind of saddle does the typical Hunter rider use? Close Contact??
I use an all purpose. It depends on what you're doing, what feels best, and what fits you and your horse best. Could be a close contact, could be ajumping saddle, could be an all purpose.

And whats the typical stirrup length? (I would guess when your leg is out of the stirrup the bottom of the stirrup hits your ankle bone).
Again, that's a personal preference. It typically should be 1-2 holes shorter than your normal huntseat flat work length, but that varies.

Help needed... desperately.
Thank you!!!

Definitely show in the velvet! Even if it's less comfortable, as long as it's safe, wear the velvet helmet.

Ok, and a pulled mane for my horse. Sounds good.
The tail, I dont have to do anything? Not that I could, my horse scratches
the top of his tail and he has very little hair there.
You should braid it, but sometimes you can't help it if there's nothign to braid. See what you can do with a bunch of hair spray and gel though. Also, use an anti-microbial (sp?) medicated shampoo (I use Mane and Tail Pro-tect(sp? again)) and scrub it really well to get any bugs out that may be making him itchy. You may want to look into a tail guard.

And any color shirt short sleeve with a jacket, or long sleeve. They probably would waive the jacket, seeing as how we are in South Florida... VERY hot!!!!
If they only waive it without completely banning jackets, wear your jacket. You may have to suffer for about 2 minutes, but you can take it off as soon as you're out of the ring to cool off. It shows respect and knowledge of proper turnout.

Im not going to a show TOO SOON. Ill probably be going to one in November or December or somewhere around there, i havnt decided yet. I just know that im going to one or a few. I need to get tall boots. they are soo expensive.

If you won't be showing too often at bigger shows, I would look into a pair of used leather boots. I got mine for $8 when they were worth about $450 If you're going to be doing really small shows, rubber boots will work, but they look really tacky so try to find leather ones ASAP.

Do you HAVE to ride in tall boots? Because I rather enjoy riding in my paddock boots with Half chaps!
Yup... I would NEVER go into a show ring in half chaps.

What color tack would you put on a black horse???
Almost all my tack is red.... BUT my close contact saddle is brown so that wouldnt look very nice!
IMO, light oil tack looks great on darker horses But any clean, well fitting tack that isn't too horrendously different in color will do just fine for a small show

What kind of pads do you use? Usually I just use an all purpose square pad. Is that alright? I think ill get a fleece half pad to go over that.
Or would a fitted pad be better?
Definitely get a fitted pad.. Again, you will NEVER see anyone with a square pad in hunters. Not a good idea.

No boots allowed. YOu can warm up in them, but you can't have boots on your horse while showing. Hunters is supposed to show off that your horse is a clean, safe, strong jumper, and clean, safe, strong jumpers don't knock rails or need boots. At least that's the theory behind the rule

Wow... (total beginner!!)
I never knew i knew so little!

Yup, should be perfectly fine.

???
Good luck at your show, and most importantly, have a great time! Make sure to update us as soon as you show! Pictures, too, if possible

well... my hair is down to my butt. So its pretty long, I dont think i could comfortably fit all my hair in my helmet... lol

Always braid his mane? How? When its pulled its only like 4 inches. So button braiding?? please say no!!! AHH... lol

Oh wow... ok, so overview: (correct me if im wrong)
Rider:
light color short sleeve shirt
show jacket
tall boots
velvet helmet'
hair tucked in helmet or? in a bun?
What about gloves? I think gloves are a good idea, lol
khaki breeches?

Horse:
pulled mane (doesnt have to be braided?)
braided tail (the type of braid they call a fish something or other?)
OH what about clipping?? How long should their bridle paths be? Do I have to clip his fetlocks He has really cute clyde fetlocks from his sire

Tack:
NO boots ( )
fitted pad
close contact or all purpose saddle
snaffle bits, ok
And a regular bridle?

Correct anything if its wrong.. or make other suggestions!
Thank you!

I would do a tight braid from the bottom of your neck and put your jacket over it That's wht I used to do before I chopped all of my hair off.

Always braid his mane? How? When its pulled its only like 4 inches. So button braiding?? please say no!!! AHH... lol
Sorry... but yes, button braids You technically don't HAVE to braid, 'specially for smaller shows, but it is really sloppy, disrespectful to the judge, and braiding is a major part of what separates the people who look like beginners from the people who look like they've been there and done that. Even if you're new to showing, the braids will make you LOOK like you know what you're doing and earn you major brownie points with the judge!

Oh wow... ok, so overview: (correct me if im wrong)
Rider:
light color short sleeve shirt

show jacket

tall boots

velvet helmet'

hair tucked in helmet or? in a bun?
Helmet preferrably, or down your back under your jacket in a braid
What about gloves? I think gloves are a good idea, lol
Definitely wear gloves
khaki breeches?

Horse:
pulled mane (doesnt have to be braided?)
Not by the rules, but I would say yes.
braided tail (the type of braid they call a fish something or other?)
Yup, if possible, although a braided mane with an un-braided tail is acceptable. You do just a normal french braid to the end of the tail bone or just above.
OH what about clipping?? How long should their bridle paths be? Do I have to clip his fetlocks He has really cute clyde fetlocks from his sire
Bridle paths should be about 3 inches, or to where the tip of the ear reaches when it's flat back. I personally like shorter bridle paths (2-3" or so) on anything but arabians though. And yes, I personally would clip the feathers.

Tack:
NO boots ( )

fitted pad

close contact or all purpose saddle

snaffle bits, ok

And a regular bridle?
Regular bridle, no flash attachment, no figure eight, nothing "fancy" (nothing different from a plain ole snaffle bridle), raised/stitched browband/caveson.

Correct anything if its wrong.. or make other suggestions!
Thank you!

That all looks pretty good!

Yep that's pretty much it. khaki/ green khaki breeches, ratchater with a monogrammed collar (doesn't have to be white, in fact most are other colors), show coat(blues, green, brown or gray), tall boots, black velvet helmet and black gloves
And how should your hair be?
Your hair need to be up inside your helmet with hairnets and some clips. Braids and hairnets are not really acceptable in hunters.

And the horse:
How should his mane and tail be?
Depends on if it's a schooling or rated show. The general rule I follow is if the show is rated b or higher I braid the mane and whether the tail gets done depends on the horse. If it is just a schooling show or rated lower than b, I go with a nice neat pulled mane and tail. The mane should be on the right side of the mane and about 3-5 inches long. The tail should free of tangles and clean.
What kind of saddle does the typical Hunter rider use? Close Contact??
Close contact
And whats the typical stirrup length? (I would guess when your leg is out of the stirrup the bottom of the stirrup hits your ankle bone).
Yep stirrup hitting the ankle bone.

Help needed... desperately.
Thank you!!!

Go with the black velvet one as long as it's approved. It will look much better for a show even if it's a little less comfortable it's the better choice.

Ok, and a pulled mane for my horse. Sounds good.
The tail, I dont have to do anything? Not that I could, my horse scratches the top of his tail and he has very little hair there.
Scrub his tail with some anti itch shampoo or even betadine to help it feel better. Then you can try using some MTG on it to help encourage the hair to grow. Romeo rubbed his badly and now it's almost better.

And any color shirt short sleeve with a jacket, or long sleeve. They probably would waive the jacket, seeing as how we are in South Florida... VERY hot!!!!
I would go with a long sleeve shirt that way if the do wavie jackets you can still look nice. And yes it can be pretty much any color just make sure it looks good on you and matches your jacket and horse.

Im not going to a show TOO SOON. Ill probably be going to one in November or December or somewhere around there, i havnt decided yet. I just know that im going to one or a few. Do you HAVE to ride in tall boots? Because I rather enjoy riding in my paddock boots with Half chaps!
Showing in half chaps can get you marked down and at some show you can be disqualified. I would get some tall boots if I were you. You can try to find some used ones in your area. Some tack stores carry used/consignment tack and usually have boots. Devon-aire is a decent brand that doesn't cost too much. Try to find some leather boots b/c they will last you much longer.

What color tack would you put on a black horse???
Almost all my tack is red.... BUT my close contact saddle is brown so that wouldnt look very nice!
Have you tried using some darkening oil on your tack? It could help get your tack closer to matching your saddle. You want to try and have everything match as best you can. For hunters I prefer darker leather for most everything but it's really a personal preference.
What kind of pads do you use? Usually I just use an all purpose square pad. Is that alright? I think ill get a fleece half pad to go over that.
Or would a fitted pad be better?
A fitted pad or a fitted half pad is what you want to use for hunters. You never want to use a square pad for hunters, eq, etc.

For hunters no boots are allowed. Although I seem to remember some people using overreach obbts on occasion but I could be wrong

Yep an eggbutt snaffle will be fine. If you are going to bigger shows then I would said switch to a d-ring but for now it's fine.

Okay hope that helps! Have fun showing
