Thank you very much!
Those instructions will be EXTREMELY helpful. Ive never had to button braid a horses mane before cuz i always had my arab in shows and his mane was free flowing. But my friends who were doing arab sport horse had to button braid and i would watch them and how long it took them... Does NOT look like fun! lol

Oh... and if it is possible to braid the tail, how far down do you go>?

A lot of people hit it on the head.. but here's what I'd do.

Whats the typical dress for a hunter rider???
Navy show coat, white long sleeve shirt (reason: if coats are waived and its really hot out, sleeveless shirts look messy. You can wear a sleeveless, but bring a long sleeve), green-beige or tan breeches, tall boots, black show gloves, velvet helmet.

And how should your hair be?
Dont do any of that hair bonnet thing. Personally, I do NOT like the look of them. They're used much more in dressage. Use a hairnet ($2.50 for the good ones [Aerborn brand] for 2 that last FOREVER). Put the net over your nose, and tie it into a low pony tail, lift the hair net off your nose to your hairline, flip your head upside down, and put your helmet on from back to front. Plus George Morris would bop you on the head

How should his mane and tail be?
Schooling show, you have a choice to do hunter braids or have a neatly pulled mane. Honestly, if its a schoolie/local, just have a neatly pulled mane. For the tail, if its not rated, leave it unbraided.

What kind of saddle does the typical Hunter rider use? Close Contact??

close contact.

And whats the typical stirrup length? (I would guess when your leg is out of the stirrup the bottom of the stirrup hits your ankle bone).

For the flat, yes. 1/2-1 hole shorter for the jumping phase.

Why does the shirt have to be monogrammed?

No. Does it look nice? Yes. Is it safer than a stock pin? Yes.

You are quite welcome....If you practice, braiding, you will get it down with no problem before show time, that's how I learned, I practiced and practiced, till I got it down.... as for the tail, I always braided to the end of the tail bone, then braided the "left over" and pulled it up through the tail braid...Cathy

Unless braids are discouraged (that's strange, never heard of that) I ALWAYS braid! It looks SO much tidier, and even a nicely pulled mane can flop around when you're jumping. Also, navy coats aren't necessary unless you're doing medal classes, so don't worry if your coat is some other subtle color. And even if they waive coats, unless they are absolutely not allowing coats, I suggest wearing your coat. That's why all of my shirts are sleveless, I always show in my coat. You're in the ring for about two minutes, and that amount of time probably isn't going to kill you and it looks so much better. After you've done more shwoing, you may want to invest in a couple of shirts so you have one (or more) of each style.

Ohhh, and "show bows" (the little clippy thingies with a little net to put your hair in) are NOT a good idea in hunters. Find some way to hide your hair rather than having a big clump at the base of your neck which looks sloppy and can get in the way of looking up while going over the jump.

I'm not sure how much you are planning on showing in the future but if it's more than a few shows here and there, then I would try to find some leather boots. The synthetic ones look ok but are easily noticeable and don't look as nice. A good pair of leather ones will last you a very long time. I know the leather ones will probably be more but take you time and look for used ones. If not then there are some for around $200 last time I checked. So just wanted to toss that in.

Also I think I said it but monogrammed isn't necessary but it costs about the same as a stock pin and looks much better. Honestly hunters is a fashion focused area so looks matter to a certain degree. You don't have to have everything of the lastest fashion but there are some trends that have become the standard and you can be overlooked or even marked down for them. This also applies to the hair clip bun thingy. You see them in dressage shows and at some breed shows but on the regular hunter circuit they are not really accepted. So try your best to get your hair up in your helmet there is a trick to getting it all in there if you have a lot but it is possible. If you need directions just ask.

Sorry if any of that makes someone mad but it's what I've learned from years working and showing on the h/j circuit.

ok.... I agree with what most people say.
Even though it takes more time I will braid BOTH mane and tail, just because it looks neater.

When braiding the mane do you leave some hair by the whithers? Because id just feel a lot safer if theres a hunk of mane to grab in case of an emergency. lol

And I would wear my jacket anyways... it does look a lot nicer and much more presentable and professional.

Thank you all for your wonderful knowledge of which I lack!!!
