lol. I would so not be allowed to show if I weren't dressed properly! Around here, everybody dresses nicely even at 4H shows. I think that when peopel don't want to put the effort into their turnout, they are lazy and don't care. They shouldn't be showing but rather schooling instead. |

imagine this.. pony club testing day, my horse is bathed his mane is neatly roached, I am in my white breeches, tall boots, jacket (and I am not rich... I worked for the tack show to buy my boots.. used and I got my jacket.. used my breeches were the only thing I got new and I worked them off at the tack shop). The other kids in the test show up in jeans, okay maybe they are changing, nope, they honestly wanted to do their test in blue jeans and T-shirts. I have seen those kids turned out better for riding meetings... and they still passed. honestly I found it totally disrespectful that they put no effort into it. not only to the other two testers that were properly turned out (and one was a 6 year old child) but also to the examiner. At the local fair a couple weeks ago there were kids showing hunter, in pink polo shirts. In this area Turnout has definitely fallen by the way-side. Excellent post though!

Great thread! And where do I begin...hmmm. Turnout for both horse and rider is EXTREMELY important and it is the first impression the judge sees EVEN before you perform; as you are entering the ring. The judge is already making "mental" notes! Whether it be a small show or big show, you always need to dress the part because this shows the judge you are serious, paid attention to detail, and have taken the time to prepare. As for the $ needed, you can have good show clothes on a very small budget...so like someone else said, I don't buy that excuse at all. There are plenty of places on the internet and at local tack shops to buy used clothes, equipment, etc. The judge doesn't know how much $ you spent and can't see brand name labels, as long as what you have is appropriate and fits well. | Senior Member+ | LOL!! We were NEVER allowed to waive coats. Even at the lowest level schooling shows. We were expected to show with full coats, shirts, collars, pins, and we each had a "show" helmet, which back then had nothing to it, not even a chinstrap. LOL!!!! And if you forgot gloves or a hairnet, you scratched. Period.

As for Dressage (at least in my area) - for the schooling shows (unrated), they clearly spell out "schooling attire". Koda and I just showed a few weeks ago in our first dressage schooling show, and we were not out of our element. Low levels (Intro, Training) wore breeches, polos, belts, boots/half chaps, etc. The upper levels wore the entire gambit - and of course braided. ![]() And my friend Amanda's turnout for the same show (where she was showing only lower level like me (on my horse - she took him training, I took him intro) ![]() Heck, now that I think about it - the low levels around here even compete in rated shows in polos... the shadbelly's are kind of kept to the big time ladies... There were 4th levels at this particular show, and they turned out to the HILT..... This is Erin at Tryon, and she was showing First Level here. She finished with awesome scores: ![]() And here is Amanda doing 2nd level at a rated show - you can see the turnout difference.... ![]() Anywho, I guess what I am trying to say that in dressage it seems to correspond with the levels.... at least RIDER turnout. I have only been in the dressage world for about a year - but let me tell you - it seems a LOT more lax than my time in the hunter world.... my trainer would have fainted and shaved her head before she let me EVER ride in a pair of half chaps and a polo. LOL!!!!! And I have been smacked my by current trainer for clipping Koda's muzzle..... LOL!!!! Different beasts, they are. Lest you think my current trainer a softie, she demands proper turnout even for lessons.... recently telling my 10 year old that if she comes in the ring with her shirt untucked again she will be running laps. In the sand. In the ring. While she holds her horse.

Question: On the subject of braiding, if you are judging a show where horses will be shown both English and Western in the same day, do you frown on a horse for being banded rather than braided? Because I know that most of the open shows I go to, they do English after Halter but before Western, and the horse is supposed to be banded for the halter and western. On the subject of clothing (regardless of discipline), I feel that you shouldn't bother going to a show until you have something decent to wear...It is REALLY not expensive if you put some work into it. Just this weekend, I went to the western resale shop near me and bought a horsemanship slinky and a nice vest for a total of $40. Will I buy showmanship pants and chaps for a small local show? No. I'll wait off on that until I either finish losing weight or go to a bigger show...but I *am* going to wear nicely fitted, starched jeans and an appropriate top with a clean hat and clean boots... Though I can't afford to buy them till payday, they also had english stuff in my size....Breeches 20-30$, shirts $20, jacket $20, and they all looked nice. Boots are the only thing I've had trouble finding affordably and I think I'll find some of those if I look around a bit more.

So one day jackets were waved and I started going in to my Eq class with jacket on (as well as a couple others) the judge stopped us and told us to take our jackets off. I personally didn't think it was that horribly hot out, but I'm a cold person and love the hot hot weather LOL
