Unless I'm using a medicate shampoo (i.e. fungal) or I have one with sensitive skin/allergies, all of my horses are bathed with Suave shampoo and conditioner. I also use basic Johnson's baby shampoo or baby wash.

I have used human shampoos before, but always pretty diluted and rinse well. I know they aren't particularly PH balanced for horses...but I never had one lose their hair or anything. I stick with horse products now though. Mine only get baths with soap every 3-4 months at most.

At the barn I ride at, they use this very nice smelling shampoo (smells like raspberry's) from Sally's Beauty Supplies, and it works great. There is nothing wrong with it (unless your horse has allergies to something), I personally like it better than horse shampoos.

The only human shampoo I use is Head & Shoulders and it gets used only on the tail. In pony club it is crucial that you have a dandruff free tail, so... scrub-a-dub-dub I go with that stuff, works wonders.

horses have potential to be allergic to any shampoo, horse or human. So the best you can do is just do a test patch before using it for safety. I know someone who didnt do a test patch and used mane and tail on a mares entire body. She broke out in hives and had them for hours after. They had to keep rinsing her thoroughly and ended up washing her with suave (what they used prior) to try and get the mane and tail out of her hair.

Personally I love those big 99c bottles of suave shampoo. I use about a whole bottle of shampoo and conditioner before a show (sometimes there is about 1/4 left at the bottom). I just buy moisturizing suave shampoo stuff since my horse is only washed before a show, he needs the extra moisture in his hair for our dry humid state (az). I know my trainer and all her students buy different brands of human shampoos to use on their horses. They do have stuff like whitening shampoos for the greys and paints that they use after their human shampoos, or they have cowboy magic to do touch ups on the white spots. But to be honest, with my horse, you cant tell the difference if I use a giant bottle of Suave or Tresseme or if I use mane and tail and cowboy magic.

I'm sure that Pantene would be just fine for both mine! I have been using Equus Micro Tek on mine, but when that runs out, Quick silver for Mikey my mini appy, he has 4 white boots, and a white/flaxen mane and tail....and probably more micro tek for Xiphias...

we have tee tree shampoos which worked wonders on my friends horse when she had a bad reaction to some fly bites, i swear the poor mare looked so lumpy, but after the bath she was loads better.

i guess it depends on cost, horse sensitivity and personal prefernce/ what we have there at the time!
