I use human shampoo but I have heard that dishwasher detergent works great and is easy to rinse. I believe people use Dawn. I use Brite and White on his white though but Woolite works great on their white too. Anytime I can save money I will.

The human shampoos supposedly ruin the ph level of hair coat on horses. However, Mane and Tail shampoo is also used on humans. I often have wondered if the PH level is such a concern why is Mane and Tail ok for both? I also have wondered if its not more of the marketing shceme (sp?).

For most cases I use Baby Shampoo in the giant bottles and usualy the generic. It seems to be very gentle and it doesnt strip hair of its natural oils. I also use Orvus which is claimed that you can use it on just about everything. I dont think its ph balanced for any type of particular animal. I say some of the shampoos like orvus have closer of a nutural ph level.

I dont use heavily perfumed shampoos due to the fact that some of the fragrance of such can draw bugs of various kind.

I will say this again at the risk of turning blue in the face:

You should stick with a shampoo for use on horses and by all means follow the directions on it! Most all dog and horse shampoos should be diluted. Failure to properly dilute shampoo can cause HUGE reactions on the skin, thus causing big problems!

I've used human shampoo for the vast majority of my 20 + years of working with horses. Never once have I had a bad reaction and the times I have used horse shampoo on the horses I was pretty disappointed.

I've heard the whole "horse shampoo is pH balanced for horses skin etc" but I have yet to find any information that shows what a horses pH level is and what a humans is. So who knows if they are actually different or if it's just marketing ploy. As I stated earlier pH balanced or not I've always had more success with human shampoo. Just steer clear from flowery scents, which can attract flies.

Agreed! Also I find it odd that human pH and equine pH is different but there's "equine" shampoos advertised for use by humans also such as Bridles & Bows, Mane & Tail, Eqyss....if humans can use equine shampoo why does it work the other way around?

I forget what the pHs are but if say a horse has a higher pH than a human, it's easier to come back to the middle (neither acidic or alkaline) than it is to go further out.

Not only is it a matter of possible allergic reactions, but when a product is diluted that's made RTU (ready to use) you won't get the full effect of it's benefits or likewise... if it is made to be diluted and not, it can screw up the results as well.

If it wasn't important, do you think companies would make highly concentrated products for use when they could sell RTU?
