HUGE knot in tail.

Christina has a new horse at her house for a few days, Oliver. Well, his past owner never really combed his tail much, from the looks of it, and now, there is a HUGE knot in it. Chris and I tried getting some out, but it seems impossible.

Here are some pictures so you guys get an idea:

^ the thing being held in the air is the knot

Does anyone know how to remove the knot, without having to chop off the tail??

Thanks!

-Aimee

LOTS of time. Misty gets those and it doesn't help when she gets burs too I use mane n' tail detangler (I'm sure and detangler would work though) Set aside 2 hours for that job one hair at a time

Wash it and leave some conditioner in it for five minutes...wash that out then apply alot of cowboy magic and start picking it apart by hand

when a horse has tangles that are more like matted than just knots, washing it will only make it tighter. And it will make the hair weaker and more likely to break. SOAK it in some kind of detangler. I personally like absorbine show sheen. As said before, wd-40 works great, baby oil, anything slick. start from the bottom of the knot and work your way up. Section it out and brush one part at a time. IT's going to take you a LONG while to do this. You may wind up sutting a lot of it in the end, but you can probably save some of the tail. Don't worry tho- it will grow back!~Brit

My horses tail done the same thing except she got a tree limb stuck in it! Don't ask how that happened cause I don't have a clue! Anyways..I use Infusium 23 (Yes it for people, but its completely safe!)..You have to work it out by put the Infusium 23 in it and work with it with your hands put a little more in it so on and so on...

Follow the advice already given and whatever you do..DON'T get tempted to get after it with a brush or God forbid........scissors!! My husbands ended up with a WIDE chunk of mane cut down to a couple of inches long. (He had a long, full and natural arabian mane) The hubbys mom was *ahem* helping with the knots. I about cried.
