Thanks guys, my aim is to move into dressage next season as I have a fantastic Danish warmblood mare that has super paces, I guess I don't want to let her down with my bouncing trot as opposed to a smooth controlled sitting trot. It is something that my instructor is going to work on with me and we are having sessions on the school horses without stirrups so hopefully that will help me not let my mare down next year........... |

I strongly suggest reading Ride With Your Mind by Mary Wanless. I know it looks like a kinda basic book but it has TONs of really good useful information. I love Mary Wanless. I had a clinic once with a lady who trained with her for years and it was really beneficial for the sitting trot. It has a lot to do with activing certain muscle groups and learning about basic body mechanisms in order to get a good sitting trot. My favorite exercise is riding with no stirrups at a sitting trot and pretending my legs are super long and dragging on the ground, but while also using core muscles and sitting up straight and putting my shoulders back. The last time I did that I was really sore for a few days, so I noticed my sitting trot is much better. It's just a suggestion though. |

When learning to sit the trot, i'm a dressage rider, my trainer told me to over-exaggerate leaning back on my but and letting my things hang loose. To help you loosen up, ride without stirrups and do ankle rotations, not just up and down though. Also, to loosen your seat and move with the horse quickly pick up leg and bring them back down. This will make you feel really out of balance and awkward if you're not doing it right. Only do it for a stride and don't bang your horse. I did and he jumped forward into his big, super extended racing horse trot. Not fun! It takes a lot of work, and trial and error. I can sit the trot and ride bareback on my trainers little 14.2 lazy bum pony, but not my big trotting standardbred!
