... instead of paddling with his fronts? not an easy thing if the horse is a downhill stocky quarter horse, i'm sure you know how it feels if u own one

Of course with your horse being down-hill it'd be harder.. But to truly get a horse stopping with his weight NOT on his forehand, you really need impulsion, and the horse's weight rocking back on the hind-end....

My paint mare used to do this and this might not work for you. But what i did is i would ride her straight at a fence and stop right when i came up on it and this tought her to sit deep when she was stopping. But like i said this might not work for you, it depends on your seat to. Also try doing rollbacks and backing up this teaches them to rock back on there hip and can also help.
