How to protect fetlock in show ring? help!

Wow...that is a shame. I've always wondered why EVERYTHING but naked horse with tack is banned from the ring. These horses are intense atheletes...you'd think SOMETHING would be allowed

I do like the clear nail polish idea... Something to try, at least. Is there a brand that isn't shiney? I don't want to really draw attention to the area. Or, since she's a bay, maybe some goth-black nail polish?

JB and Rick, the question for this purpose isn't truly training--I have a very good instructor who can see me in person.

But I appreciate the offer. The issue is now there's scar tissue (from the fall I mentioned earlier) that sticks out WAY more on one fetlock than the other. That's WHY she's catching the fetlock and she didn't use to. (It's not something that started with the introduction of the flying change--it's something that has been happening since the fall in the warm up ring last year.) Honestly, I'm not even sure she's doing it IN the change...that's just my best guess. But it's definitely happening in the show ring once she is out of her DSBs. And it doesn't happen every test...usually only once per show. (We ride 3-4 tests in a weekend.)

Good thought, but I'm not sure my vet bill could handle anything more!

(I'm still paying on March's spring shots, preventicare, teeth floating, etc...)

I'm not sure if it's a big enough problem to warrant that, though. Even though the scar tissue is larger than I would like, the amount that she's actually cutting herself is very small. (The largest cut she's given herself in the show ring is probably 1/2 the size of my pinky nail.) It's always healed within 3 days after the show. I'd just like to avoid it at all, if I can. I'm probably making a big deal about nothing... but I've always been an overprotective horse mommy.

How's this theory: if you let her keep skinning the spot, she's likely to build up a callous and her own little "patch". But if you keep her booted all the time and only let her knock it once in awhile, and only in the show ring- the skin is going to stay soft, and she might get sour on entering or really moving in the show ring.

Hrm... that's an interesting theory! I've never thought about it like that... And it might give me a better idea of exactly when and how often she is catching it, since I can experiment and regulate better at home.

Thats kinda my thought too. Didn't you say that she lamed herself last time?

I think that may too big of risk.... she's too valuable to "experiment' on

Have you talked to your vet and/or coach about this particular issue?

I'd use the moleskin and use a magic marker to make it black. Just put it on before you go to the show. No one will notice.
