How to keep a black horse from fading out

I had my aunt from AZ here a few months ago and she was telling me she uses something in her black mares feed to prevent her from fading out and sun bleaching. It was something simple from the kitchen, anyone know what it is! I forget

    PAPRIKA!
I feed it to all of mine. They love it, and its inexpensive.
If you show, be sure to stop feeding it 7-10 days before a show, as the capsaicin in it will test positive!

Use a flysheet and shampoo with a black shampoo on show day. Also, wash the sweat off after a workout.

We have a black gelding. We don't use Paprika. It can show up positive in a drug test.

Out horse only really fades where his saddle sits.

PAPRIKA! Thank you! lol. I don't show her, as of right now. She is a bucking bronco ride and a hand full on the ground, but maybe one day... I just really don't like the way a black horse looks all faded out and brownish! Her body doesn't really fade too much, just her mane and tail.

I tried paprika, started using it in december all through september of the following year and kept a sheet on my horse. It didn't work. Here is a pic of him in spring:
Yes, he is genetically black, I had him tested

    Mid Summer

    Mid Fall

I wish I could feed him something that works, faded pony isn't fun. As stated above, he was given paprika from december 2007 till september 2008 and kept sheeted and still faded like mad.

August 2009: you can see the fading where his saddle sits. That is from sweat.

We don't feed paprika. We just use a UV fly sheet and black enhancing shampoo on show day.

Just a warning, I don't use the blackening shampoos or dyes. Actually, over shampooing as well can all encourage bleaching. The blackening shampoos work like dyes and have an agent to help make the black "stick" that will fad the color upon washing out.
