Sorry guys but WAKE UP. The government supports the food chain it will help feed cattle that will help feed people,if you allowed the breeding of horses specifically for human consumption then the government would help feed those horses in time of drought etc. If you as a breeder, trainer or what ever fail to provide a plan for natural occuring events (other than tornado/cyclone or extreme flooding......... these things can remove all your stored feed etc) then you have no-one but yourself to blame for your situation and it must be questioned as to what you add to the horse industry and equestrian world at large. If you have not established sources of feed and sources of alternative feeds and budgeted sufficiently to afford such things then why should you be subsidised. If however in a matter of minutes all your stored feed, all your fences and infact your home is destroyed then your pastures are deluged with salt water, then you have no way to allow or prepare for such things, they are mostly not covered by insurance(act of God) Then it is suggested that you have had 6 months support you don't deserve anymore. That to me seems to be extremely narrow minded. Never mind the fact that extensive bloodline could be lost forever,4 or 5 generations of breeders, trainers, farmers gone from the horse industry forever. I think that as much as possible should be done to help these people for as long as needed.
Certainly weed out the scammers(there will always be a few) but lets get a grip guys and truelly evaluate who are the needy here.

I had someone call me yesterday that wanted to sell me square bales for $2.50 per bale, said it was a mix grass/alfalfa.... if we look hard enough up here, I am sure we can get a load together for you.
I can't say what the cost involved would be.... but I can look around if you want me to?

May I add... at this price I would try to get him down as far as possible and shoot for $2 or less.
Also alot of farmers are looking in the hayloft and finding they have extra so I don't think it would be too difficult to find but it would be alot of hopping around from farm to farm to get a load.
Round bales are available too, this would all be last years crop ofcourse.

OMG I could so use some. The only problem with shipping hay is fuel prices. But at this point we're paying about $10 a bale for coastal(bermuda) and it isn't always good quality hay.

I would be in for buying some of the truckload and may be able to find someone else to buy more!
I just wanted to say, that the pres is helping but the small farmers are still suffering. Look at our cows out here, they literally are racks of bones!!! I went and bought a complete feed that isn't suppose to need to be fed with hay. Well my mare coliced, so back I went to get the lil girl some hay.

Hey BW if when you get close to the end of your supply, and their is still no relief in sight. My hay supplier here in Roberts, Montana has his own truck to haul hay. He just sold the last of his alfalfa grass mix which was awesome hay. He has available a Timothy/Orchard grass mix in rounds and squares. I just started doing business with Carl this summer and so far all the hay I have fed to my horses (Approx 15 ton) other than very little surface mold, the insides of the rounds have been mold free. If this is an option at some point PM me I will get you in touch with him. Oh he has been charging me $90.00 a ton of squares and $50.00 for a round bale approx. #1200............. Also He can probably find more hay, but hte price may fluctuate some.........Good luck and Prayers sent South to your area.........JJ
