I have tried a great many things (leaving it completly alone, brushing, washing, oils, etc) and have concluded it is all about genetics...and my horse has a thin, strangly tail no matter what I do

In opposition, my friend swears by a tail bag..her horses tail is in it 24/7/365 and it is 3 feet past touching the floor, but her horse is also an egyptian arab, and they are bread to have long tails..

Caution:::: Don't make soaking wet and put it up it will fall out !! good luck.

Shapley's MTG works real good as well. I've been using it on my gelding's mane and I've noticed a big improvement in fullness.

Just wondering, has anyone ever used MTG on their own hair?

I don't know about using MTG on my own hair but to make a horse's tail thicker you put moose(sp) in it. Find the most voluminizing moose out there and put it in right before the class. I know QH have a genetic thing for thin tails and I used moose in it and it was very nice looking. You could also try buying one of those fake tails but it's a little more expensive..ok a LOT more expensive. Hope this helps. horse_on

My mare is strange, she has the thickest most unruly mane ever but her tail is so thin. I've tried everything, not it is really long, that's not a problem, but it will always be thin. If you do find something that works let me know though!

GOOD LUCK!

Suggestions:

-Add a Biotin supplement. Grow hoof =Grow coat, mane & tail.

-Add Black Oil Sunflower Seeds and/or flax seed , the oils are great for the skin.

-Avoid brushing and combing too often, try to hand pick it to avoid hair breakage and damage. Use something like Laser Sheen or Show Sheen before brushing or picking to help loosen knots while decreasing hair damage. This will also help keep it clean.

-Make sure dewormings are up to date, a healthy horse on the inside will be more healthy outside.

-Make sure another horse or object is not causing too much damage to the tail -- another horse biting it or it being rubbed on a fence or stall...

-Tail bags are OK in my opinion, but I feel uncomfortable leaving one on my horse, same with a halter ... I'm worried about it being caught on something, but I suppose in a safe stall all would be OK.

-I will swear by this stuff ...

-Most of all time ... give it a chance to grow and fill out, stop messing with it.

-Genetics can also play a large roll ... ever seen Appaloosas with "rat-tails"?!

Black oil sunflower seeds have worked wonders for my horses manes & tails, & they're much cheaper than most grooming supplies. They're also great for the coat & for weight gain.

Give the tail a really good washing, and then condition it. Braid it and put it in a tail bag, you will see BIG improvements. If you keep it clean and in a bag it should grow. If you cant get a bag, and old sweat sock works perfectly! (sounds gross eh? lol)

To make conditioner:

Put some conditioner into a bottle ( I usually use VO5 b/c i can get it from the dollar store, but any conditioner- horse or human- without shampoo in it will work.) Add a very small amount of baby oil, then fill the rest of the bottle with water, and shake it up. If it seems too watery, add more conditioner, and if it has too much conditioner, dump some out and add more water. Hope it works
