Tomato juice/paste does not work unless you leave it on a long long time. The only person I know who's ever tried it and said it worked left it on for more than 24hours. Otherwise all you get is an animal that smells like both skunk and tomatos. Vinegar or dawn dish soap works much better. Mixing either with hydrogen peroxide improves it's effectiveness. It took my dog 5 times to learn skunks weren't that fun to mess with.

I used dawn dishwashing soap. The reason that the skunk smell stinks around so long and that water and regular bath soap doesn't work is because the stink is oil-based. And guess what dawn does - it gets rid of grease, which is also oil-based.

When my pup got skunked, I gave her a dawn bath, a peppermint (she got it straight in the face!), and a regular bath. After that, she was allowed to sleep in the house again.

Since our Black Lab, loves the black and white "kitty cats" around here.
I used the peroxide, dawn and baking soda.. and a few other things.

Finally broke down and called a good friend who grooms dogs..
Nothing I have ever tried has worked as well as what she uses..

Get this, Massengil douche! a bottle per ten pounds of dog,
Works like a dream ..
You just work it into the fur and let it sit a few minutes.

I would work it in to the affected area, and towel it off..

Good Luck,
Paula

Below is what I recommend to clients for their dogs that have encounters with skunks:

Mix hydrogen peroxide (1 qt) with baking soda (1/4 cup) and add 2 tbsp of dishwashing liquid. Sponge freely onto the dog. The ions freed by the baking soda and peroxide mixture will combine with the essentials in the skunk spray and convert it to an odorless gas. The tricks to this are that you can't mix it up in advance and you need to do this before you use water on the dog as water will "set" the spray. You also need to use this solution quickly as the freed oxygen ions dissipate quickly.....within 3-4 minutes

Stuff is harmless though eyes should be avoided.

Not so,I had a 15.3 gelding that got sprayed, and I used 27 bottles of tomatoe juice,to wash him, didn't leave it on him long, and it did wonders, but nowadays with prices, probably chdeaper to use something else.

Best of luck to you and your skunk dilemma. I feel for you. I have had my dogs sprayed before, and it wasn't fun. We used a product made specifically for removing skunk spray, and it worked just fine. It was easier than tomato juice as well. It came in a spray bottle. It was called S.O.S. ( skunk odor spray ) I am from Canada, and don't know if you have access to that product. Good Luck !! I hope you are able to lavish your baby in hugs and kisses soon.

Well everyone, the smell has worn off some, he still smells bad but he will have to continue to stink.. Its been in the low 40's, and really chilly here... I just dont feel right giving him a bath now, hopefully it continues to fade quickly.... Thanks for the suggestions...
