Question How to get a horse back in shape?

My Sis-n-law got this paint mare. She got her through a rescue place out of a feedlot. The people that ownered her used her as a breeding mare but after two dead foals they shipped her to the feetlot. So she big real big. big old belly. lol so what some tips to get her back in shaped? We took her off pasture a few days ago so now she beening feed three times a day. what should we feed and what besides riding her could help her lose the baby weight? thanks

sorry if this is in the wrong place didnt know where to put it.

I am currently in the process of getting my new gelding into show condition. I have been lunging him about twice per week in side reins and riding...also doing a lot of train riding as this also helps condition believe it or not. Start slow, maybe 5 minutes of trotting in both dirrections with breaks before and after, and slowly had a few minutes here and there...then start adding canter after a few days.... she'll gradually get back into good shape

Since this is August, You are looking at probably November/December before you have a horse you can start putting some serious time on. So basically, if you are planning to start anything soon, be aware that winter is coming and your schedule may be different. 15 minute trot sessions for a week or so, increase that to 30 minutes every few days in 5 minute intervals. Then you can add loping...trot 25 min, lope 5.....and increase it down to half and half........every few days, add 5 more minutes...still keeping the session at 30 minutes. Then you can start adding time onto the session itself.....every few days, add 5 more minutes.

Mind you this isn't including your warm up and cool off period. The less in shape the hrose is in, the longer your warm up and cool off time will be. Remember that.

Then through the winter, you can really kick into gear getting the horse seasoned for any showing and such that you want to do starting probably about January after you've gotten the horse going good and tuned up both physically and mentally between now and January.

Also, different horses will respond differently. So what would take my horse to come back around in 3 months, may take another 6 months.

And personally, with what I advised, you CAN do 5-6 days a week. As the more the horse is exposed, the better and sooner the muscles go OH OK, WORK time. remember, multiple Short sessions are ten times better than one or two LONG sessions.

I agree with both CowGirl, BW and just use common sense and don't forget to have your VET. and Farrier check the horse before starting your conditioning plans.
I hope this helps.

only problem i see is we dont got anywhere to lunge/or work with a horse. I am trying my hardest to get my grandpa to build a nice corral/arena(wouldnt take more then 3days to build, he thinks it will take up to much of the pasture but it wont) to use for barrels and place for horse to go off the pasture and have room to run. Right now we got two pens one is about 20x20 then other is 20x30 and the 20x30 got a big pile of wood in it which i trying to get my dad to take out of it -_- the pasture it self has sprinklers system. each row as 15feet inbetween sprinklers and 15feet inbetween each lane of sprinklers. *sigh*

There is no place for you to take a line and lunge your horse? You don't need anything really but a line and some space.

Or you can ride too....forget lunging if the horse is broke. Just saddle up and stick with the same time frame.
