How to get a black horse

I am considering buying a Gypsy stallion and 2 Gypsy mares that are black with white legs (They look like little Shires). Since the black horses came from black and white horses, what are my chances of getting black foals with no color? From what I remember about genetics and sweet peas and stuff, I think it's 3 out of 4 will be black. Does anyone know? Also is it possible to do genetic testing to see if they are homozygous for black (which I think means they would produce 100% black foals). Do both parents have to be homozygous or just one? If there is a test, how much is it and where would I get it done?

If these horses are really black, not just dark bay or dark brown, then you at least know that the bay modifier isn't involved. What you don't know is whether the red gene is involved. If either of the breeding pair is homozygous for black, meaning they have 2 black genes and no red genes, then the foal will be black. If both are heterozygous black, then you have a 75% chance of black, and 25% chance of chestnut.

Whether or not you get spots depends on if either of the breeding pair is homozygous or heterozygous for spots. If either is homozygous, you'll get spots. If both are heterozygous, you have a 75% chance of spots, 25% chance of solid.

As Sandra listed, UC Davis does color testing, and there's another place that I'm not remembering at the moment. It's not expensive, $60 or less.

Why would you want a solid black gypsey horse? I would think that you would want them to be black and white....they are such beautiful horses....Cathy

Thanks for the information. I'm not far from UC Davis, so that's doable.

Xiphias, there was a song in the 60s or thereabouts--"diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks". I like Gypsies and I like black horses. Since I'm not the only one, and there is a market for them, I'd like to breed them. I can appreciate your liking the traditional ones though.
