How To Get a Black Foal?

My mare is a liver chestnut color. Does anyone have any idea what color stallion I would use to produce a black or grey foal? Or is this too much of a long shot?

You want to breed to a stallion who is homozygous for black. ie who can ONLY throw black babies. When talking to stallion owners, this should be your first question. And ask for piccies etc as sometimes, i have found, some stud owners arent really sure and just say YES he is...

For a grey, if he is homozygous for grey, again, he will throw grey.

Horses have 2 genes, they can on from each parent. If dad has black only genes, he will pass one on, and homozygous black will cover chestnuts, so - you mares chestnut gene wont show up in bub. Its bub might produce a chestnut.

It's never a SURE thing, as far as I know. Even if you breed to a homozygous, you have to take your mares genes into consideration, because I THINK that chestnuts can carry in the agouti gene. Meaning, the foal will either be black or bay--but never chestnut.

You must have one gray parent in order to get a gray foal, so you'd have to breed to a gray stallion. As for the stallion being homozygous for gray...I'm not sure if that's a sure thing, that you'd get a gray or not. I don't know very much about gray.

If you breed your mare to a chestnut, though, you'll always get chestnut. So, if you don't want another chestnut, steer clear!

There are two genes at work here. Agouti and Extension (A and E)

A black horse is aaEE or aaEe.

Your horse being chestnut could be aaee, Aaee, or AAee. If your horse is carrying a dominate A gene that gets passed on, then you would get a bay from breeding to a homozygous black horse.

So your possibilities from breeding to a homozygous black are Bay or black--without knowing what your mares Agouti genes are.

If you bred to a homozygous grey, you would get a grey. If you bred to a heterozygous grey, you would have a 50% chance for grey, and 50% whatever combination of the base colors are.

Gray trumps all.

So a homozygous Gray will definitly get you a gray.

now, for the base color, homozygous black with no agouti and hope your mare is not a homozygous agouti in her genes....and you SHOULD get a black.

But honestly, the BEST way to get a BLACK foal is to go and buy one.

You'd want to have your mare tested for the Agouti modifier to see if black is even possible. If she's homozygous for it (AA) then you will never ever get a black foal - at best you'll get bay. If she's heterozygous (Aa) then if the stallion is black himself and is homozygous for black, then you have a 50/50 chance of a black foal.

Gray - as others said, a homozygous gray stallion will always give you a gray foal. Heterozygous gray gives you a 50/50 chance.

Buy one. Easy, comes with a 100% black guarantee! Then you don't have to waste so much time thinking about trivial things like conformation, temperment, useability... all that junk.

A homozygous black horse will only gaurntee black when bred to black. Bred to chestnut you have a chance for bay. So with your mare you would give you black or bay foal with a homozygous black stallion. As for gray, breed to a homozygous grey stallion and you will get gray. The base coat will be red or black but will gray out.
